About St Ives
Our host had left the key in a ceramic seagull on the doorstep, which felt both trusting and faintly ridiculous, but the gesture matched the place: small, bright, and quietly proud of its view. From the kitchen window you could lean on the sill and watch the tide creep up the sand of Carbis Bay without moving more than an elbow. The sitting room was low-ceilinged and slightly wonky, the sort of room that makes you duck instinctively until you realise the beams aren’t actually going to brain you. A pair of deckchairs waited on the tiny patio like they’d been expecting us all morning. After the journey, even unpacking felt like an event. We carried bags upstairs two at a time, pausing on the landing to admire the framed photo of the bay in 1953, all trilbies and stripy swimsuits. The bedroom faced the water; the bed was already made with that crisp, slightly starched sheet hotel trick that always makes me feel as though I’ve got away with something. I opened the window and a gust of wind promptly rearranged my fringe, which seemed fair payment for the view. Downstairs again, the kettle had just boiled when we noticed the tide was already turning. We wandered the thirty-odd steps to the beach path, shoes in hand, and stood for a moment watching toddlers chase retreating waves with plastic spades. It struck me, not for the first time, that the real luxury of a place like this isn’t the thread-count or the welcome hamper; it’s the sudden permission to stop moving. The journey had left my shoulders somewhere near Bristol, but standing there with wet sand between my toes I could feel them settling back into place. We ate pasties on the patio as the light slid from gold to rose, the cottage behind us already feeling less like a stranger’s house and more like a borrowed jumper—comfortable, slightly oversized, and exactly what we needed after the long drive. |
