About St Ives
Once inside, the cottage felt instantly like the right place for this time of year. The wood-burner was already laid, and the first thing we did was light it even though the calendar said spring. Outside the sash windows the garden was a bright, wet green, daffodils flattened but still cheerful, and the path down to Porthminster Beach glistened under the sudden sunlight that followed the rain. We’d come for the quieter shoulder season—fewer crowds, cheaper parking on the harbour, and that particular Cornish light that makes everything look freshly washed. The first evening we walked the short lane into town just as the cafés were shutting. Most of the ice-cream queues had vanished, leaving only the hardiest locals and a couple of wet dogs. We grabbed pasties from the bakery that stays open later and ate them on the harbour wall, watching the fishing boats rock and the gulls argue over chips. Back at Sparrows Nest the sitting-room window framed the last of the sunset over the bay, and we spent the next hour simply watching the sky change from peach to indigo without feeling the need to do anything else. By the next morning the weather had settled into that mild, showery pattern Cornwall does so well in April. We wandered down to the beach with coffee in takeaway cups, shoes off despite the breeze, toes sinking into cool sand that still remembered winter. The water was that deep, steely blue that only appears before the summer crowds arrive, and we stood for ages just listening to the waves rather than swimming. Later we strolled the coastal path toward Carbis Bay, hoods up when the showers passed, then down again when the sun reappeared, the whole stretch to ourselves except for the occasional dog walker. What struck me most, looking back, was how little we’d planned and how right that felt. In summer I’d have been fretting about parking and booking tables; here the season itself seemed to set the pace. Sparrows Nest, with its cosy corners and that view straight onto the water, matched the mood perfectly—unhurried, a bit damp around the edges, and all the better for it. |
