About St Ives
When we finally pulled up outside the little white cottage tucked just back from Porthmeor, the relief was instant. The front door opened straight onto a sun-trap patio where two stripy deckchairs were already waiting, as if they’d known we were coming. Inside, everything felt bright and calm: pale walls, big windows, and that faint seaside smell of salt and warm wood. We dumped our bags, kicked off our shoes, and stepped straight back outside again. There was simply no point in doing anything else. The beach lay only a couple of minutes’ walk downhill, and the tide was out, leaving a wide stretch of pale sand that looked almost too inviting. We wandered down with nothing but a blanket and a bag of paperbacks, spread ourselves out near the rocks, and let the afternoon happen. Seagulls wheeled overhead, children built elaborate sandcastles further along, and we read, dozed, and occasionally lifted our heads to watch the light change on the water. Back at the cottage the patio became our headquarters. We made endless cups of tea, moved the deckchairs every hour to follow the sun, and watched boats drift across the bay. Lunch was whatever we could assemble without much effort—crusty bread, local cheese, tomatoes that tasted of summer. The gentle rhythm of doing very little suited us perfectly; there was no timetable, no must-see list, just the quiet pleasure of hearing the sea through the open windows. By evening the light had turned golden and the patio still held its warmth. We sat there with glasses of wine, feet up, listening to the last swimmers calling to each other across the sand. I caught myself thinking how rarely we allow a whole day to unfold without plans, and how much lighter everything felt because of it. The little mishap on the lane already felt like part of the story rather than a delay, and I realised that arriving flustered had made the stillness that followed even sweeter. The next morning promised more of the same—another slow start, another blanket on the beach, another chapter read in the sunshine. Waves End had done its job without trying: it had given us permission to stop. |
