About St Ives
I’ll never forget the drive down to St Ives – or rather, the near-disaster that kicked off our holiday. We’d piled into the car in Bristol, kids buzzing with excitement about pasties and beaches, me navigating via a dodgy phone signal that kept rerouting us through every tiny lane in Cornwall. Then, about 20 minutes from Carbis Bay, disaster struck: a massive tractor trundling along at snail’s pace, blocking the road completely. We sat there for ages, engine idling, while my other half muttered about “holiday vibes already ruined.” I tried to play it cool with some rubbish car karaoke, but secretly I was picturing us turning back home. Finally, it veered off, and we tumbled into the off-road parking spot at this cracking little house near the beach, hearts racing but grinning like idiots.

Stepping inside felt like a proper sigh of relief. It’s one of those single-storey gems, all cosy and laid out just right for a family like ours – no faffing with stairs after a long drive. First impressions? Blimey, the super-king bedroom hit us like a hug: massive bed, telly already on some rubbish daytime TV, and that en-suite with its walk-in shower screaming “long soak time.” The kids bolted straight to their double rooms, each with their own TV for inevitable lazy mornings (genius for avoiding squabbles). And the bathroom? Bath or overhead shower – choices, mate! We dumped the bags and just breathed it all in, the faint sea air wafting through the windows.

That arrival chaos melted away faster than ice cream on Porthminster Beach. We wandered down to Carbis Bay’s sands that first afternoon – it’s literally a hop away – paddling in the shallows, building wonky sandcastles while the tide crept in. Laughed about the tractor over fish and chips from a beachside van, salty chips blowing everywhere in the breeze. Evening brought a stroll to the local shop for essentials (wine for us, sweets for them), then back to flop on the sofa, windows open to the sound of waves. Pure bliss.

Looking back, that mishap was a blessing in disguise. It made the house feel like a sanctuary, all the more welcoming after the road rage. I caught myself that night, kids zonked out, thinking how these simple spots – parking sorted, beds comfy, beach on the doorstep – are what holidays are really about. No five-star fuss, just proper Cornish escape. We spent the next days pottering to St Ives harbour for cream teas (jam first, obviously), mooching around the Barbara Hepworth Museum, and even a cheeky train ride along the coast for laughs. But honestly, it was that first mad arrival and the house’s easy charm that set the tone – chaotic start, perfect unwind. Can’t wait to go back.
