About Weymouth
I’ll never forget the drive down to Weymouth – or rather, the bit just outside West Compton where our sat-nav decided to throw a proper wobbly. We’d set off from Bristol full of beans, sandwiches packed and the kids chattering about beach fossils, but halfway through, the thing started rerouting us down what felt like a sheep track. “Recalculating,” it chirped cheerily as we bounced over potholes, with me gripping the wheel like my life depended on it and my other half muttering about why we didn’t just stick to the A35. By the time we spotted Eggardon Hill looming like a friendly giant, we were late, flustered, and I’d somehow managed to spill coffee all over the passenger footwell. Classic us – turning a two-hour jaunt into a minor adventure.

Pulling up to this cracking little holiday spot attached to the owners’ place, though, all that chaos melted away. We were greeted by the loveliest couple – proper Dorset folk with smiles wider than the Frome Valley. They waved us in, handed over the keys with a “make yourselves at home, loves,” and then vanished back to their side, leaving us with total privacy. It’s remarkably spacious inside, done up in that cosy, lived-in style that screams “relax here,” and from the off, it felt like we’d stumbled into our own rural bolthole. First impressions? Spot on. The views out the window straight to the hill had me grinning like an idiot – perfect for walkers and cyclists like us lot, though I reckon the kids will just charge about pretending to be dinosaurs.

We barely unpacked before heading out for a proper mooch. A short drive into Dorchester – all of five minutes, thank goodness – and we were wandering the historic streets, popping into the county museum where the Roman mosaics had the little ones wide-eyed. “Look, Mummy, that’s older than Granny!” one piped up, which cracked me up. We grabbed pasties from a bakery that smelled like heaven, then wandered the shops and pubs buzzing with locals. Nothing fancy, just that easy Dorset vibe. Back at the cottage that evening, we cracked open a bottle of local cider (the owners left a welcome bottle – cheers!), and I had one of those moments staring out at the twilight over Eggardon. Here I was, knackered from the drive but buzzing with how simple pleasures like this recharge the batteries. Work stress? What work stress?

Next morning, we were off to the Jurassic Coast – Weymouth’s beaches are a quick hop, and we spent hours fossil-hunting along the pebbles, dodging waves and filling buckets with ammonites (well, mostly stones, but who’s counting?). The property’s bang in the sweet spot for it all: nature trails up the hill for a leg-stretch, pretty villages like Powerstock a stone’s throw for a pub lunch, and Dorchester’s eateries tempting us back for more. One evening, we even cycled a loop through the valley – lungs burning, but those views! It’s the ideal base for West Dorset fiddles, whether you’re a proper rambler or just fancy chilling with a brew.

Honestly, that messy arrival set the tone for a holiday full of laughs and proper unwinding. If you’re after a spot that wraps you in warmth without the crowds, this is it. We’re already plotting a return – sat-nav permitting.
