About Weymouth
I’ll never forget the drive down to Weymouth – sat nav on, classic FM humming away, and me feeling all smug about beating the holiday traffic. Then, disaster: a cheeky wrong turn near Dorchester had us looping through some back lanes for what felt like ages. The kids were starting to grumble, and I was mentally drafting my excuses for why Dad’s sense of direction is “more of a suggestion.” But honestly, that little detour planted the seed for the whole trip – we ended up stumbling on these hidden corners of Dorset that no guidebook bangs on about.

Finally rolling into Greenhill, hearts lifted at the sight of the sea sparkling just ahead. Our first-floor waterfront apartment was a belter right from the off – light and airy with that massive bay window framing uninterrupted views over the shingle beach and out to the horizon. Allocated parking spot? Tick. Modern kitchen for whipping up fish finger suppers? Tick. Two big bedrooms, a family bathroom, and even a separate TV room to stop the inevitable squabbles. It felt like home but with waves crashing below – perfect base for a family getaway, and we were buzzing to explore.

First morning, we wandered down to the beach, but instead of joining the crowds at the main strip, I suggested we veer off left along the promenade, away from the donkey rides and ice cream vans. Big mistake? Nah, pure gold. We got properly lost in the best way, weaving through quiet residential paths that hugged the cliffs. Stumbled on this tucked-away spot called Bowleaze Cove – a pebbly gem with barely a soul around, where the kids spent hours skimming stones and I pretended to be a pro (failed miserably, naturally). The sea air hit different there, crisp and wild, with Chesil Beach stretching out like a secret you’ve nicked from the locals.

Next day, same vibe: aimed for Weymouth Harbour but took a daft shortcut inland. Lost again, but landed in Radipole Lake nature reserve – who knew? Tucked behind the town, it’s this serene spot with reed beds buzzing with birds and easy paths for little legs. We picnicked by the water, spotting kingfishers darting about (or were they? My eyesight’s not what it was). Felt like we’d gatecrashed someone else’s private paradise, far from the Nothe Fort crowds just a mile away.

Even evenings brought surprises. One night, post-fish and chips from a no-frills takeaway we found by accident off the beaten path, we mooched along Greenhill’s back lanes and discovered a wee community garden hidden behind hedges. Overgrown benches, wildflowers, and not a tourist in sight – we sat there as the sun dipped, sipping squash, chatting rubbish.

Looking back, that initial sat-nav faff was a blessing. Weymouth’s magic isn’t the obvious lidos or Sealife Centre (lovely as they are); it’s these off-radar nooks you find when you let yourself get lost. Gave me a proper moment of reflection – in our screen-glued lives, isn’t wandering aimlessly the real recharge? We left with sandy shoes, full bellies, and memories that’ll outlast any postcard. Can’t wait to “accidentally” head back.
