About Weymouth
We’d booked this elegant apartment bang in the heart of it all, just a stone’s throw from the beach and those buzzing seaside shops, restaurants, and pubs. Sleek and comfy inside, perfect for our little family crew, it felt like our own slice of coastal heaven from the off. But here’s the thing – I’m not one for the obvious tourist traps. Give me the hidden gems, the spots you stumble on by accident, and that’s where the magic happens. Weymouth’s got loads of ‘em if you’re daft enough to get lost like I did. First wander out, we veered off the main drag down a side path near the beach, chasing the sound of gulls, and bam – there’s this tucked-away cove I’d never heard of, not Bowleaze or Castle Cove exactly, but a pebbly pocket wedged between them, all rock pools and secret swims. Kids went wild poking about for crabs while I paddled like a kid myself, laughing at how I’d nearly missed it faffing with that sat nav. Proper off-the-beaten-track bliss, just us and the sea. Next day, trying to find the mini golf course – yeah, the one a mile up – we took a daft detour through the back lanes behind Weymouth Pavilion. Lost? Absolutely. Reward? This gorgeous little arcade hidden in a side street, vintage machines that whirred and clanged like they were from the 70s, no crowds, just echoing laughter and a high score on the penny waterfall that still makes me smirk. Felt like we’d gatecrashed someone’s private nostalgia party. The real gem, though, came when we aimed for Chesil Beach, that dramatic stretch backed by the West Dorset Heritage Coast, only three miles out. Got properly turned around on the coastal path, ending up at this wild, empty bit of shoreline where the shingle meets the sea in these massive, whooshing waves. No one around, just us beachcombing for sea glass and watching seals bob about – or were they dolphins? Who cares, it was magic. Sat there with fish and chips from a nearby harbourside spot (harbour’s right on the doorstep, boat trips galore if you fancy), reflecting on how getting lost like that beats any guidebook. Me, the eternal wanderer, finally admitting I’m better off without a map. Made me think – holidays aren’t about ticking boxes, are they? They’re about those serendipitous detours that stick with you. Even toyed with a sea safari from the lively harbour, but the accidental finds stole the show. Portland’s close too, just up the road at 4.5 miles, with its history and coastal walks, but we saved that for next time. Weymouth, you sneaky beauty – you’ve got me hooked on the joy of wandering blind. Can’t wait to get lost there again. |
