About Weymouth
I finally made it to Weymouth after what felt like the world's most faffing journey down from the Midlands. Picture this: I'd packed the car to the gills with wellies, waterproofs, and enough crisps to siege a castle, only for the sat-nav to chuck a wobbly just past Dorchester. It rerouted us down some narrow lane that had more potholes than a dodgy dentist's waiting room, and we ended up with a puncture. Twenty minutes of me wrestling the spare tyre while the kids chanted "Are we there yet?" like a broken record. Still, by late afternoon, we rolled into Wyke Regis, hearts racing with that proper holiday buzz – you know, the one where everything's about to be brilliant.

Pulling up to this cracking end-terrace holiday home was an instant mood-lifter. Allocated off-road parking right there, so unloading was a doddle – no dodging traffic with armfuls of gear. Stepping inside, we were hit with the cosiest sitting room, telly on standby and a faux fire glowing like it was begging for a cuppa. Kitchen was spot on too, sleek and kitted out for whipping up fish finger suppers or whatever chaos we fancied. Sea views from the windows? Chef's kiss. First impressions: this place was spot-on for our family of five, tucked away yet minutes from Weymouth's buzz and a hop from Portland.

We'd come for walks – proper leg-stretching, lungful-of-sea-air hikes – and Weymouth delivers on that front. Day one dawned bright(ish), so we laced up and headed out along the coastal path from Wyke Regis towards Chesil Beach. That shingle stretch is something else, waves crashing like they're auditioning for a blockbuster. We pottered for miles, spotting oystercatchers and dodging jellyfish washed up after the tide. Kids were in heaven, skimming stones and pretending to be pirates. Me? I felt alive, wind in my hair, forgetting the daily grind.

But oh, British weather – that cheeky devil. Next morning, skies turned from blue to battleship grey faster than you can say "umbrellas at the ready." Our grand plan for the full Portland Bill loop? Scuppered. Instead, we pivoted to a sheltered ramble around Nothe Fort gardens, rain spitting just enough to make it an adventure. Huddled under hoods, we laughed as the heavens opened proper, turning a gentle stroll into a full-on squelch-fest. "This is character-building!" I yelled over the gale, while secretly cursing my optimism. Back at the house, we dried off by the fire, mugs of tea in hand, plotting tomorrow's drier route.

By mid-week, the sun peeked out again, gifting us a cracker of a hike up to White Nothe. Steep cliffs, wildflowers nodding in the breeze, and those Jurassic Coast views that make you proper grateful. We even spied a seal bobbing about – magic. One evening, as the weather teased another downpour, I sat by the window watching the sea churn, kids knackered and happy. Made me reflect: life's too short for perfect plans. These weather-whipped walks, mishaps and all, knit us tighter than any five-star resort could. Weymouth's got that raw charm – unpredictable, beautiful, and just right for soggy souls like ours. Can't wait to go back.
