About Weymouth
I’ll never forget the drive down to Weymouth – we’d set off from Bristol full of beans, sandwiches packed and the sat-nav promising a breezy two hours. But oh no, halfway through, I took a wrong turn onto some narrow country lane that turned into a proper comedy of errors. Mud, tractors, and a flock of sheep that stared at us like we’d gatecrashed their party. By the time we arrived, we were knackered but buzzing with that holiday anticipation – the sea air hit us first, salty and promising chips with everything.

Pulling up to this stylish first-floor apartment right in the thick of Weymouth’s lively seaside buzz felt like striking gold. It’s got that contemporary vibe, perfect for a couple like us (or a family, I reckon), with everything spot-on for a comfy base to explore the Dorset coast. First impressions? Spot on – airy windows letting in the harbour views, and a kitchen that screamed “get cooking, lazybones!”

We wasted no time diving into the food scene, which is Weymouth’s real star. Strolled straight to the harbour for fish and chips from one of those legendary beach huts – golden batter, proper mushy peas, and vinegar that zings. Sat on the pebbles watching the boats bob, feeling like proper locals. That evening, we hit a cosy pub just down the road, the kind with low ceilings and punters swapping tall tales. Pints of local Dorset ale – smooth as you like – and a ploughman’s that could feed a rugby team. Cheddar so sharp it could cut glass, crusty bread, and pickled onions that had me puckering up like a lemon. Laughed our heads off at the barman’s jokes about the weather; classic British banter.

Next morning, I fancied playing chef in that swish kitchen. Nipped to the town’s market – what a gem, stalls heaving with fresh Dorset seafood, plump strawberries, and artisan breads. Grabbed some mackerel, new potatoes, and herbs that smelled like summer. My attempt at pan-frying the fish? Let’s just say it was more “enthusiastic char” than gourmet, but with a splash of white wine and a side of those spuds roasted to crispy perfection, it wasn’t half bad. We ate on the balcony, sun dipping low over the bay, toasting to my “cheffy” skills with a chuckle. Gently reflecting there, I thought how these daft kitchen disasters make holidays memorable – beats eating out every night, doesn’t it?

Day two, we wandered to another cracking pub for lunch – think juicy crab sandwiches from the freshest catch, slathered in mayo, with a side of triple-cooked chips. Washed down with ginger beer for me (designated driver duties) and a cheeky cider for her. Even tried my hand at a seaside picnic from market finds: pasties stuffed with local beef, Cornish fudge for pudding. Bloody marvellous, though I say so myself.

Evenings blurred into more pub crawls – one with live folk music and steak pies that flaked just right, gravy rich as sin. We’d stumble back to the apartment stuffed and happy, fridge raided for late-night cheese nibbles. Weymouth’s food pulse – markets brimming, pubs pulsing with grub and gossip – made it the perfect foodie escape. Left pondering how I’ll recreate that mackerel magic at home without burning the house down. Can’t wait to go back!
