About Weymouth
I’ll never forget the drive down to Weymouth last summer – me behind the wheel of our trusty old Fiesta, sat-nav chirping away like it knew best, and my partner dozing in the passenger seat. We’d just passed Dorchester when disaster struck: a sneaky diversion sign popped up out of nowhere, courtesy of some roadworks, and suddenly we were on a winding B-road that felt like it was leading us to Narnia. Half an hour later, hearts racing and arguing over whose fault it was (spoiler: mine), we finally spotted the sea and rolled into Stavordale Road, buzzing with that mix of relief and excitement you only get on holiday.

Pulling into the private driveway of this cosy flat was pure bliss right from the off. There it was – our marked parking spot, No7, free for the whole stay. In Weymouth, where parking can nick £20 a day or slap you with a fine quicker than you can say “seagull snack,” this was luxury on legs. We grabbed our bags, unlocked the door, and stepped into a bright, welcoming space that screamed “kick off your shoes and unwind.” First impressions? Spot on – comfy sofas, a kitchen that didn’t look like it’d been built in the ark, and views that teased the harbour just a stone’s throw away. I could already taste the fish and chips.

But the real magic of Weymouth isn’t the postcard spots like the beach or the harbour clocktower – nah, it’s the hidden gems you stumble on when you let yourself get properly lost. That first afternoon, fancying a wander, we headed out without a map app (my daft idea, naturally). We veered off the main drag down past some back lanes near the station, and boom – discovered this tucked-away pebble beach at Greenhill, where locals were crabbing off the rocks with nothing but a bit of bacon and a bucket. No crowds, just the lap of waves and a cheeky crab that nearly nipped my finger. Laughed till we cried, then rewarded ourselves with ice creams from a no-frills kiosk that made the posh parlours look overrated.

Next day, we “accidentally” took a wrong turn towards Rodwell, ending up on a footpath that hugged the back of the old trailway. It spat us out at this secret little cove by Nothe Fort – not the fort itself, mind, but a forgotten slipway where the water’s so clear you can see the seaweed dancing below. We picnicked there on pasties from the indie bakery we’d sniffed out earlier on a whim (butter dripping everywhere – worth it). Felt like we’d gatecrashed paradise.

Wandering those off-the-beaten-path lanes near Preston Beach one evening, we got gloriously lost again, weaving through narrow paths lined with wildflowers. Stumbled on a hidden viewpoint overlooking Portland Bill’s distant silhouette (close enough to feel its pull, but we stayed local). Sat there as the sun dipped, sharing a thermos of tea, and I had one of those quiet moments – you know, reflecting on how rushing around misses the best bits. Life’s too short not to get lost sometimes; it’s where the stories hide.

By the end of the week, we’d mapped our own quirky Weymouth – the unpretentious chippy down a side street, the quiet garden nook behind the library for a sneaky read. That flat in Stavordale Road wasn’t just a base; it was the launchpad for serendipity. If you’re after proper relaxation with a side of discovery, get yourself down here and let the detours do the talking.
