About Weymouth
I’ll never forget the drive down to Weymouth – we’d packed the car to the brim with kids’ beach toys, cool bags stuffed with picnic odds and ends, and enough crisps to last a siege. About halfway there, just past Dorchester, the satnav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us on a detour through some narrow lanes that had me gripping the wheel like it was a lifeline. The little ones were chanting “Are we there yet?” on repeat, and I was half-convinced we’d end up in a field somewhere. But we made it, just as the sun dipped low over the sea, and honestly, that first glimpse of the coastline made the whole faff worthwhile. I could already feel the holiday buzz kicking in.

Pulling up to our spot, a beautifully renovated first-floor apartment in a prime development right overlooking the sea, I was chuffed to bits. It’s the sort of place perfect for families like ours – cosy yet spacious enough to corral the chaos of two under-fives without anyone losing the plot. Stepping inside, the views hit you straight away: waves crashing below, the beach stretching out like an invitation. We dumped the bags and raced to the balcony for that proper “we’ve arrived” moment, breathing in the salty air while the kids pressed their noses to the glass, spotting seagulls dive-bombing for chips.

The next few days blurred into that perfect relaxed rhythm you crave on holiday. Mornings started with brekkie on the balcony – toast slathered in marmalade, watching fishing boats bob about in the harbour. Weymouth’s beach is right on the doorstep, so we’d toddle down for sandcastle marathons and paddles in the shallows. The water’s bracing, mind – one dip had me yelping like a startled seal, which sent the kids into hysterics. Classic dad fail, but their giggles made it gold.

We wandered the harbour, grabbing fresh crab rolls from one of those no-frills stalls – messy, delicious, and gone in seconds amid cries of “more ketchup!” Nottington beach was our secret splash for pebble-skipping contests, and we even ambled over to the Sealife Centre, where the kids were mesmerised by the sharks gliding past. Evenings were pure cottage-life bliss: firing up a simple barbecue on the communal space (salmon from the local fishmonger, naturally), then collapsing on the sofa for a family film, sandy feet and all. There was the inevitable chaos too – one night, a rogue seagull nicked half a pasty off the balcony railing while we weren’t looking. Cue mock outrage and a fresh round of laughs.

Looking back, it was those simple pleasures that stuck – no grand plans, just us pottering about, rediscovering what matters amid the daily grind back home. I caught myself one quiet sunset, kids finally knackered and snoring, thinking how these unhurried days recharge the soul. Weymouth worked its magic; we left sunburnt, stuffed with memories, and already plotting a return. If you’re after a laid-back family escape with sea views and zero stress, this is your spot.
