About Weymouth
I’ll never forget the drive down to Weymouth – what should’ve been a straightforward few hours from Bristol turned into a proper comedy of errors. Sat-nav decided to take us on a detour through some winding country lanes that felt like they hadn’t seen tarmac since the war, and just as we hit the A354, the heavens opened. Rain lashing the windscreen, kids in the back moaning about needing the loo, and me white-knuckling the wheel while my other half helpfully suggested we pull over for fish and chips. By the time we rolled onto the Esplanade, we were soaked, slightly frazzled, and arguing over whose fault it was that we’d forgotten the beach towels.

But oh, pulling up outside that first-floor Edwardian apartment? Instant mood-lifter. The building’s got this classic charm, right on the seafront, and as we lugged our dripping bags up the stairs – cursing the lack of a lift after our earlier chaos – those full-height sash windows hit us first. Peeking through, Weymouth’s golden beach stretched out like a postcard, waves crashing gently and families strolling the prom. We dumped the gear and just stood there, jaws dropped, watching a cheeky gull nick chips from a lad below. First impressions? Bloody brilliant – or rather, absolutely smashing, given the day we’d had.

Stepping inside felt like a warm hug after the madness. The open-plan living space is spot on – modern but cosy, with a kitchen island begging for a cuppa and a natter. We cracked open a bottle of fizz (salvaged from the car boot) and parked ourselves by the window, mesmerised by the view. Sun breaking through the clouds, painting the coastline in that soft Jurassic glow – you could watch the world go by for hours, from paddleboarders to donkey rides chugging along the sand. No wonder we forgot about the soggy socks.

That first evening, we wandered straight out the door onto the Esplanade – no car needed, thank goodness after our drive. Nipped into town for fish and chips from the Pavilion end (proper crispy batter, none of your soggy nonsense), then ambled back as the sun dipped, lighting up Nothe Fort in the distance. Kids crashed out in the twin room, dead to the world after the beach sprint, while we sprawled in the king bed, lulled by the sea’s murmur through the open window.

Looking back, that arrival kerfuffle was the perfect icebreaker – taught me not to sweat the small stuff, especially when you’ve got views like this waiting. Weymouth’s got that unpretentious magic: sandy toes, ice creams from Bennet’s, a gentle paddle in the harbour. We spent days exploring the Jurassic Coast paths nearby, fossil-hunting at Greenhill, and even squeezed in a go on the pleasure pier rides. Selfishly, I could’ve stayed put in that apartment forever, gazing at the changing skies. If you’re after a seafront bolt-hole that ticks every box, this is it – mishaps and all, it was the holiday highlight.
