About Weymouth
I’ll never forget the drive down to Weymouth – we’d packed the car to the gills with beach toys, cool bags, and enough crisps to last a siege, only for the satnav to chuck us into a massive tailback just past Dorchester. There we were, stuck behind a caravan the size of a small house, kids in the back moaning about needing the loo. “Dad, are we there yet?” piped up little Ellie for the umpteenth time. I was this close to turning it into a picnic on the hard shoulder, but we finally broke free and rolled into town as the sun dipped towards the sea. Heart racing a bit from the delay, I couldn’t help but grin – Weymouth was sparkling, that classic seaside promise hanging in the air.

Pulling up to our first-floor apartment, right in the thick of it all, I felt that proper holiday buzz kick in. It’s one of those spots where you step out and bam – beach ahead, a cracking pub just across the road. We hauled the bags up the stairs (note to self: pack lighter next time), and inside it was just spot on: open-plan living with those massive windows framing the sea like a postcard. Two cosy bedrooms – one with a king-size bed and its own shower room, the other twins for the kids – meant no squabbles over space. First impressions? Pure joy. We cracked open the windows, heard the waves crashing, and I thought, yeah, this is what we needed.

The next few days melted into that perfect family rhythm, all simple pleasures and a dash of cottage-style chaos. Mornings started with brekkie at the kitchen table, gazing out at the bay while the kids fought over the last Weetabix. Then it was straight down to the beach – Weymouth’s sandy stretch is brilliant for paddling and building epic sandcastles that inevitably collapsed under Ollie’s enthusiastic digging. We’d mooch along the front, grabbing fish and chips from a takeaway that wrapped them in proper newspaper, vinegar dripping everywhere. One afternoon, we hit Nothe Fort, just a short wander away – the kids loved clambering around the old tunnels, pretending to be pirates fending off invaders. Me? I was chuffed just to sit on the grass with a cuppa from the café, watching the world go by.

Evenings were pub o’clock at the place next door – nothing fancy, just a pint of local ale for me, lemonade for the little ones, and a ploughman’s that hit the spot. Back at the flat, we’d sprawl on the sofa, sea view glowing in the twilight, playing board games that descended into giggles and mild cheating accusations. There was that one moment when the heavens opened mid-barbecue attempt on the tiny balcony – us lot huddled under umbrellas, sausages half-cooked, laughing like idiots. Proper chaos, but the best kind.

Looking back, it got me reflecting on how these breaks strip everything down to what matters: salty air, sandy toes, and family daftness. No grand plans, just us lot soaking up Weymouth’s easy charm. We left with fuller hearts and emptier crisp packets, already plotting the return. If you’re after a relaxed seaside escape, this corner of Dorset delivers every time.
