About Weymouth
I’ll never forget the drive down to Weymouth – we’d packed the car to bursting with beach gear, snacks, and enough board games to keep the kids entertained for a month. Halfway there, just past Dorchester, the sat-nav decided to have a midlife crisis and sent us on a detour through some narrow lanes that made me question every life choice leading to that moment. We ended up behind a tractor trundling along at snail’s pace, the kids chanting “are we there yet?” like a broken record. But honestly, it was the perfect comedy of errors to kick off our family holiday – a reminder that not everything goes to plan, and that’s half the fun.

By the time we rolled into Weymouth, the sun was dipping low over the sea, painting everything golden, and my heart lifted. I’d been buzzing with anticipation all week, imagining lazy beach days and fish and chips by the harbour. Pulling up to our three-storey maisonette right in the town centre felt like striking gold – close enough to everything that we could wander to the beach or shops without breaking a sweat. First impressions? Spot on. It’s got that cosy, lived-in charm perfect for a family like ours, with older kids who don’t need constant toddler-proofing (no stairgates, mind, so little ones might find it tricky).

Stepping inside, we traipsed up the stairs to the well-equipped kitchen on the first floor – I was straight in there rustling up bacon butties while the other half sorted the bags. The dining area with its cushioned bench and chairs became our command centre for the week, littered with crumbs and half-eaten packets of crisps. Down a bit further, the sitting room was a proper haven: two plush sofas that swallowed you whole and a Smart TV for movie nights when the weather turned. It wasn’t flashy, just right for that cottage-life chaos we crave – you know, the kind where someone’s always spilling juice or fighting over the remote.

Our days slipped into a blissful rhythm of simple pleasures. Mornings started with a stroll to the beach, just a hop away, where we’d build epic sandcastles and paddle in the shallows, dodging the chilly waves with squeals and splashes. Lunch was often at one of the harbourside spots – fresh crab sandwiches from a shack that tasted like summer itself. Afternoons meant pottering around the shops for rock and postcards, or a gentle wander along the esplanade, ice creams dripping faster than the kids could lick them. Evenings? We’d hit a local pub for a pint and pie, the air thick with chatter and the tang of the sea.

There was this one moment, sitting on those sofas after a rainy day stuck indoors playing cards, when I caught myself reflecting: holidays like this are gold dust. Amid the inevitable squabbles – “Mum, he touched my side of the sofa!” – it’s these pockets of nothing-much that recharge us. No grand adventures, just family, laughter, and the sea’s endless rhythm. Weymouth delivered exactly that relaxed break we needed, and I’m already plotting our return.
