About Weymouth
I finally made it to Weymouth after what felt like the world's most faffing journey. We'd set off from Bristol bright and early—or so we thought—but halfway down the A37, the satnav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us on a scenic detour through some sleepy Somerset lanes. Cue 20 minutes of me swearing under my breath (quietly, mind, with the kids in the back) and the other half panicking about missing the tide or whatever. Still, by the time we trundled into Easton on Portland, the sun was peeking out over the sea, and my heart did a little flip. Weymouth's that kind of place, isn't it? You arrive frazzled, and suddenly everything feels right.

Pulling up to this tucked-away three-bedroom cottage in Easton, I was chuffed to bits. Roadside parking right outside—none of that faffing with permits—and then we stepped into this cosy gem, perfect for our family of six. The ground floor kitchen was a dream, all kitted out so you could whip up a feast without breaking a sweat, leading straight to a dining table for six where we could natter about nothing much at all. But honestly? The real star was the enclosed garden. Lush green space with outdoor furniture, a barbecue begging for sausages, and—get this—a bubbling hot tub that had us grinning like idiots before we'd even unpacked.

We'd planned this holiday as a proper switch-off, you know? No grand adventures, just the joy of doing bugger all. And boy, did it deliver. First morning, I cracked open a book I'd been meaning to read for months—some daft crime thriller—and plonked myself in a lounger with a cuppa. The others scattered: kids fiddling with beach toys they'd dragged along, other half pottering with breakfast baps on the barbie. Church Ope Cove is literally minutes away down the path, this hidden pebble beach with turquoise water that feels like a secret, but we barely made it there more than once. Too tempting to flop back in the garden instead, toes in the grass, listening to the faint crash of waves.

Lazy afternoons blurred into evenings of alfresco dinners—nothing fancy, just pasta and salads from the well-stocked kitchen—followed by sinking into that hot tub as the sun dipped low. Bubbles fizzing, cold beers in hand, we'd watch the sky turn pink over Portland Bill, not saying much. It was bliss. One night, staring up at the stars (proper clear ones, no light pollution here), I had a bit of a moment. Life back home's non-stop—work, school runs, the usual whirl. Here, time just... slowed. Made me realise how rare it is to breathe properly, to let your mind wander without a screen pinging. Gentle reminder that sometimes the best holiday is the one where you achieve precisely nowt.

We did dip a toe into local bits— a gentle stroll to the Cove for a paddle, maybe ice creams from the van by the harbour—but mostly, it was garden lounging, reading till my eyes drooped, and those indulgent hot tub soaks. Portland's got walks and watersports on the doorstep if you're that way inclined, but for us, this cottage was heaven for slowing right down. Left feeling recharged, lighter. Can't wait to go back and do even less.
