About Wiltshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Wiltshire last month – we’d packed the car with enough snacks to feed a small army, but halfway there, just past Swindon, the sat nav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us on a detour through some narrow lanes that felt more like tractor tracks. Cue mild panic from the passenger seat (me), but we laughed it off with a shared bag of crisps and arrived at our cosy two-bed cottage in the quaint village of Latton just as the sun dipped low. One mile from historic Cricklade, and honestly, from that first glimpse of the place nestled among rolling fields, I knew we’d struck gold. It looked like the perfect spot for a family unwind, all welcoming and unpretentious.

The anticipation built as we unpacked – visions of lazy mornings with fresh brews and proper fry-ups dancing in my head. First impressions? Spot on. The kitchen was a dream for wannabe chefs like us, with everything you’d need to rustle up a feast. We wasted no time diving into local eats, starting with a wander to Cricklade, the ‘First Town on the Thames’ and straight out of a storybook with its high street buzzing gently. Popped into a couple of cafes for cream teas – scones so fluffy they practically melted, clotted cream thick as you like, and jam that tasted like it was picked from the hedgerows that morning. I managed not to dribble it down my chin, which was a minor victory.

Evenings were for the pubs, and oh boy, did we hit the jackpot. The Red Lion in Cricklade became our local haunt – proper ales on tap, and their Sunday roast was a thing of beauty. Juicy beef carved tableside, Yorkshire puddings the size of saucers, and veg roasted to perfection. We went back midweek for fish and chips that were crisp outside, fluffy inside, wrapped in paper and devoured by the Thames Path. Walking it off the next day was essential, especially after my disastrous attempt at cooking that night. I fancied a shepherd’s pie with local mince from the Cricklade butcher – sounds simple, right? But I overseasoned it something rotten, turning it into a spicy mishmash that had us all giggling through watering eyes. “Mum’s experiment gone wrong,” the kids dubbed it, and fair play, it was a right laugh. Taught me to stick to what I know: beans on toast.

Markets were the real highlight, though. Cricklade’s little one on a Saturday morning had stalls groaning under fresh loaves, artisan cheeses, and pies that smelled like heaven. We stocked up on Wiltshire bacon, plump sausages, and eggs from free-range hens down the road. Back at the cottage, breakfasts became a ritual – frying up bacon sarnies with doorstep bread, black pudding on the side for the brave. One morning, I even tried pancakes with local honey; they weren’t MasterChef standard, but slathered in butter, they hit the spot.

Pub grub and home-cooked flops aside, it was those simple meals that made it special. Sitting round the table, tucking into a ploughman’s with cheddar sharp enough to wake the dead, chatting about nothing much – pure bliss. Made me reflect on how we rush through life back home, grabbing takeaways instead of savouring proper food and family time. If you’re after a holiday driven by delicious discoveries, this corner of Wiltshire, with its cafes, pubs, and market gems, is unbeatable. We’re already plotting a return for more roasts and maybe a cooking lesson. Cheers to that!
