About Wiltshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Berwick St John in Wiltshire – one of those classic British road trips where everything starts so promisingly. We’d packed the car with crisps, a thermos of tea, and high hopes for a proper countryside escape, winding our way from the M3 through those rolling hills. But about halfway, disaster struck: the sat-nav decided to have a midlife crisis and guided us straight into a muddy farm track that wasn’t even on the map. There we were, stuck in the gloopy stuff, me frantically reversing while my other half laughed and filmed it for posterity. A kindly local in a Land Rover towed us out with a grin and a “You’re not the first, mate!” Classic me – always managing to turn a simple journey into an unintended adventure.

By the time we rolled into the peaceful village of Berwick St John, right on that Dorset-Wiltshire border, we were buzzing with anticipation. What would this little gem be like? Pulling up to our cosy three-bed cottage – all traditional charm with a welcoming vibe – our first impressions were spot on. Nestled in this quiet spot within the Cranborne Chase Dark Skies Reserve, it felt like we’d stumbled into a secret hideaway, far from the tourist hordes. The garden overlooked unspoilt fields, and as the sun dipped, we cracked open a bottle of wine on the patio, already plotting how to uncover the area’s best-kept secrets.

The real magic happened when we embraced getting lost – properly lost, the kind that leads to hidden gems. Our first wander took us off the beaten track behind the village, down a footpath we found by accident after missing a signpost. It spat us out at the impressive ruins of Wardour Castle, just a couple of miles away. No crowds, just us clambering over the weathered walls, imagining Elizabethan dramas unfolding. I felt a proper twit for not knowing about it sooner – history right on our doorstep, and we’d discovered it by sheer fluke.

The next day, we veered off towards Ludwell, but took a wrong turn onto a single-track lane that twisted through woodlands. What a payoff: we tumbled upon a tucked-away farm shop in Ansty we’d never have found otherwise. Seasonal pick-your-own berries were in full swing – we spent a hilarious hour picking raspberries, emerging stained and sticky like oversized toddlers, with punnets bulging for cottage puds. That evening, back in the village, the traditional pub became our accidental local haunt. A pint of proper ale, locals swapping yarns about the dark skies – we stayed out stargazing till late, the Milky Way blazing overhead like something from a David Attenborough doc.

Shaftesbury, five miles west, was another serendipitous find. We got lost en route to the butchers and ended up on Gold Hill at golden hour – that iconic steep cobbled street with sweeping views over Blackmore Vale. We wandered the abbey ruins, grabbed a cream tea in a quirky café, and reflected on how these off-piste detours beat any guidebook itinerary. Me? I’m the chap who needs sat-nav therapy, but this trip taught me there’s joy in the jumble. Berwick St John’s cottage life, fuelled by happy accidents, was the perfect reset – who knew Wiltshire’s backroads held such treasures? We’re already plotting a return, mishaps and all.
