About Wiltshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Wiltshire last month – me, the sat-nav, and a boot full of snacks that mostly ended up as crumbs on the passenger seat. We’d set off from Bristol full of beans, picturing rolling hills and cream teas, but about halfway there, disaster struck: a wrong turn onto some narrow B-road that had me convinced we were starring in our own episode of *The Great British Escape*. The phone signal vanished, and suddenly we were proper lost, winding through hedges taller than the car. But honestly? That little mishap turned out to be the best bit – it spat us out right into the heart of some tucked-away Wiltshire magic.

Pulling up to the place in Chapmanslade felt like stumbling on a secret. It’s this cosy two-bed apartment, all low-key charm in a peaceful rural pocket, with woods and parkland practically spilling onto the doorstep. First impressions? Spot on. The anticipation built as we parked – would it live up to the pics? – and stepping inside, with that fresh country air and views that just *invited* a wander, it was love at first sight. No crowds, no fuss, just the kind of spot that whispers “put your feet up… or lace up your boots”.

We didn’t have grand plans; we just let curiosity lead, and boy, did it pay off with hidden gems we’d never have found on a map. First day, we headed the short hop into Warminster for essentials – grabbed some pasties from a no-frills bakery that locals swear by – but skipped the obvious white horse hike for a cheeky detour. Spotting a faded sign for “Shepherd’s Path”, we veered off and ended up on this blissfully quiet trail snaking through chalky slopes, with views that stopped us in our tracks. No one else around, just skylarks and the odd sheep eyeing us suspiciously. Proper off-the-beaten-track stuff, the sort you only discover when you’re happily disoriented.

The next morning, we got properly lost again, ambling from the door through those woodlands. What started as a “quick loop” turned into an hour of meandering parkland paths, stumbling on a forgotten dew pond where wildflowers were going mental. Laughed our heads off when we looped back via a wonky stile that nearly had me in the mud – classic me, always the clumsiest explorer. It got me reflecting, though: in the rush of everyday life back home, I forget how good it feels to ditch the itinerary. No pressure, just serendipity.

A quick scoot to Frome – only four miles, dead easy – unearthed more accidental treasures. Ditched the main drag for a side street and found this brilliant little artisan café tucked in a medieval nook, serving the fluffiest scones with clotted cream that could make you weep. Wandered wonky lanes lined with indie shops selling handmade pots and quirky prints, chatting with a potter who’d lived there forever. Felt like we’d gatecrashed someone’s perfect day.

Evenings were for unwinding at the on-site restaurant, tucking into hearty roasts while swapping tales of our “adventures”. No need for Longleat’s lions when you’ve got this – pure, unscripted Wiltshire bliss. If you fancy ditching the tourist traps for proper hidden corners, this is your spot. We’re already plotting a return.
