About The Roost.

The hamlet of East Tytherley in Hampshire is situated on the edge of the beautiful Test Valley. Test Valley passes many historic churches, country houses and pretty villages and follows the River Test’s course; a chalk fishing stream. Close by is the market town of Romsey and both Winchester and Salisbury are within driving distance.

  • Winchester Castle

Winchester Castle was built in 1067 and today the 13th century 'Great Hall' remains. The hall contains the greatest symbol of mediaeval mythology, King Arthur's Round Table. The Great Hall which is an enhancement of the original Winchester Castle built by William the Conqueror, is one of the finest surviving aisled halls of the 13th century.

About Wiltshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Wiltshire last month – me behind the wheel, sat-nav chirping away like it owned the road, and then bam, a rogue pheasant decides to play chicken right in front of us on the B-road near Salisbury. Heart in my mouth, I slammed the brakes, and we skidded to a halt with feathers fluttering everywhere. No harm done, but it set the tone for a trip full of unexpected characters and daft encounters. By the time we trundled into the hamlet of East Tytherley, I was buzzing with anticipation, wondering what this tucked-away spot on the edge of the Test Valley would throw at us.

Pulling up to the comfortable apartment in the eaves of the owners’ cottage, I was chuffed to bits. It’s got this cosy open-plan living area with a kitchenette perfect for knocking up a quick pasta after a day out, a dining spot, and a sitting area gazing over the woodland – pure bliss. The double bedroom beyond leads to a handy en-suite shower, and there’s loads of headroom so you’re not stooping about like Quasimodo. First impressions? Spot on for a romantic getaway; we dumped the bags and cracked open a bottle of local cider straight away.

But honestly, the real magic was the quirky locals we bumped into – they made the whole stay. First off, there was old Bert, the owners’ neighbour, who wandered over while we were unpacking, pipe in mouth and a grin like a Cheshire cat. “You from up London way?” he asked, eyeing our Hire car. Turned out he’d fought in the war and had stories about fishing the Test Valley that had us in stitches – like the time a trout leapt right into his lap during a picnic. We ended up chatting for an hour about his prize-winning marrows at the village fete; the man’s got fingers like sausages but grows veg that’d win Bake Off.

Next day, strolling along the valley paths, we met Sheila at the tiny post office-slash-teashop in the hamlet. She’s the queen of gossip, dishing dirt on everyone within five miles while pouring the best cream tea this side of Hampshire. “Don’t go tickling the otters in the Test,” she winked, “they’ve got sharper claws than my ex!” We laughed so hard I nearly spilled my scone. Her tales of village cricket matches – where the vicar once bowled a beamer that shattered the pub window – kept us hooked.

Even the evening dog-walk brought gems: eccentric Tom, the retired postman, out with his three-legged spaniel, Rufus. “Lost the leg to a fox chase,” he deadpanned, then launched into a monologue about the best pub pints nearby and how the river’s salmon runs are better than ever. We swapped numbers, promising to join his fly-fishing session next time.

Reflecting on it now, sat back home with a cuppa, I realise it’s these folk – warm, witty, and wonderfully nosy – that turned a simple holiday into something special. In a world of scrolling and rushing, chatting with Bert, Sheila, and Tom felt like a gentle reminder to slow down and listen. If you’re after a peaceful retreat with characters who’ll make you chuckle, this Wiltshire hideaway’s the ticket. Can’t wait to go back.
