About Wiltshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Wiltshire last autumn – the leaves were turning that perfect mix of gold and rust, carpeting the lanes like nature’s own confetti. My partner and I had piled into the car from Bristol, sat-nav promising a breezy hour and a half, but wouldn’t you know it, we hit a cheeky diversion just past Devizes. Some roadworks had us crawling along behind a tractor for what felt like ages, the harvest smells wafting in through the windows – damp earth and ripening apples. I was proper fidgety by then, starving and desperate for a cuppa, but it gave us time to chat about all the cosy walks we’d imagined, mugs of hot chocolate in hand under crunchy leaves.

Finally rolling up to this rural spot near Quemerford, hearts lifted at the sight of the countryside stretching out, all misty hills of the North Wessex Downs glowing in that soft October light. Parked in the allocated spot, we climbed the steps to this contemporary first-floor apartment – sleek and inviting, just right for us two and our daft spaniel, Monty, plus his mate, a borrowed terrier who’d come for the adventure. Stepping into the open-plan space felt like a warm hug: chic interiors, a well-equipped kitchen begging for soup-making, breakfast bar for two, and a comfy seating area with a Smart TV for evenings in. The countryside views from the windows were pure magic, especially as the sun dipped low, painting everything amber.

Autumn shaped every bit of it, didn’t it? Mornings started crisp, frost nipping at our noses as we wandered the quiet paths nearby, Monty bounding through piles of fallen leaves that crackled like fireworks underfoot. We’d head out to the Avebury stone circle – only a short hop away – where the ancient stones stood dramatic against a sky heavy with harvest clouds, the air buzzing with that earthy, post-rain scent. No crowds, just us and a few hardy walkers, feeling like we’d stepped into a Tolkien tale. Picnics by the River Kennet were a highlight too; we rustled up cheese ploughman’s from the kitchen, wrapped in blankets as the wind whispered through the reeds, golden foliage swirling around.

Evenings were for nesting. With the days shortening fast, we’d light the wood burner (thank goodness for that glow), simmer stews on the hob, and binge on Strictly while Monty snored on the rug. One night, a proper downpour rolled in – classic Wiltshire autumn – drumming on the roof like a lullaby, turning the views into a watery watercolour. Couldn’t venture far, so we stayed put, sipping mulled cider and playing cards till bedtime. It made me reflect, you know? In the rush of city life, I forget how restorative this quiet is – no neon, no noise, just the season stripping things back to what matters: good company, simple joys, and a bit of nature’s therapy.

Days out exploring Calne’s market (pumpkin stalls everywhere!) or pottering around Blackland Lakes for birdwatching – kingfishers darting amid the turning reeds – were effortless from our base. No long treks needed; everything felt close and seasonal-perfect. Leaving felt bittersweet, the lanes now slick with the first proper leaf-fall. Can’t wait for next autumn – this spot’s got us hooked.
