About Wiltshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Corsham last month – my wife and I, with our scruffy terrier Monty in the back, navigating those winding Wiltshire lanes. We’d set off from Bristol full of excitement, dreaming of a proper break away, but about halfway there, disaster struck: a rogue flock of sheep decided our narrow road was prime grazing territory. There we were, stuck behind a farmer herding them with his collie, engines idling, while Monty barked his head off at the fluffy invaders. Twenty minutes later, we were on our way again, laughing about it over a thermos of tea. By the time we pulled up to this tucked-away 1940s detached house on the edge of town, right on the outskirts of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, all that anticipation melted into pure delight. It looked every bit the cosy haven we’d hoped for – pet-friendly, with off-road parking (and even an EV charger we didn’t need but appreciated), and that promise of simple pleasures ahead.

Stepping inside was like a warm hug. The open-plan living space was light and airy, with a well-equipped kitchen begging for a bit of family faffing about. We dumped the bags and cracked open a bottle of wine at the dining table for six, rustling up pasta while Monty claimed his spot by the woodburning stove. That first evening set the tone: dinner alfresco in the enclosed rear garden, followed by a bubbly dip in the hot tub under the stars. Pure bliss, with just the sound of owls hooting nearby.

The next few days were all about that relaxed couple’s rhythm, laced with the gentle chaos of cottage life. Mornings started slow – brewing coffee, letting Monty chase his tail on the lawn – before ambling into Corsham’s historic market town centre, just a short stroll away. We poked around the independent shops, grabbed pasties from the bakery, and wandered the High Street where locals nodded hello like we’d been there forever. Afternoons meant easy rambles along the nearby Avon Valley paths, spotting badgers’ setts and wildflowers, or popping over to nearby Rudloe Woods for a shady walk that left us muddy-kneed and grinning. One day, we even managed a gentle cycle to Neston Park’s edge – nothing too strenuous, just enough to work up an appetite for cheese toasties back home.

There was this hilarious moment when Monty decided the hot tub was his personal paddling pool mid-soak; we fished him out, dripping and indignant, and spent the evening towelling him dry while chuckling over episodes of our favourite sitcom. It got me reflecting, you know – in the rush of everyday life, we forget how these little hiccups and joys recharge the soul. No grand plans, just us, our dog, and the quiet magic of Wiltshire.

By the time we packed up, hearts full from lazy pub lunches at the local in Corsham and one last garden barbecue, we were already plotting our return. If you’re after a laid-back family couple’s escape, this spot nails it – simple, indulgent, and utterly restorative.
