About Wiltshire
I finally made it to Wiltshire after what felt like the world's most chaotic drive down from London. I'd been buzzing with excitement all week about this little getaway – visions of rolling countryside and proper peace – but reality hit with a bang about 20 miles out. The sat-nav, that traitor, decided to play silly buggers and rerouted me down some narrow farm track that wasn't even on the map. I ended up wedged between a hedge and a sheep that looked at me like I'd personally offended it. Heart racing, I reversed like a pro (or so I told myself), splattering mud all over the hire car. By the time I spotted the sign for the holiday park near Salisbury, I was frazzled, covered in crisps from a mid-drive snack attack, and questioning my life choices.

Pulling into the spot, though, all that stress melted away. There it was – this cosy wooden cabin, snug as a bug in a rug, tucked right in the woods with trees whispering hello. First impressions? Bloody brilliant, even if I did nearly trip over the doorstep lugging my bags in, thanks to a rogue tree root. The inside was just perfect: warm lighting, a little kitchenette that screamed "cook your own fry-up", and a sofa that practically hugged you. I dumped my stuff and cracked open a window – fresh forest air rushed in, laced with that earthy pine scent. No traffic hum, no neighbours yelling; just birdsong and the distant low of cows. It was like the place had been waiting for me.

I couldn't resist a wander straight away. The site's got these cracking woodland paths snaking off into the trees – proper fairy-tale stuff, but without the witches. I followed one for a bit, dodging puddles from last night's rain, and stumbled on a clearing with benches overlooking a babbling stream. Sat there with a cuppa from the cabin's kettle, watching squirrels chase each other like over-caffeinated kids. Laughed out loud when one stared me down, probably thinking I was after its nuts. Back at the cabin, I fired up the log burner (matches at the ready, no faffing about), and it was pure bliss – flames dancing, shadows flickering on the walls.

Evening rolled in soft and golden. I nipped over to the park's play area – empty, thankfully – and swung on the swings like a daft kid, giggling at how free it felt. No phone signal to speak of, which was a blessing in disguise; forced me to just be. Dinner was simple: beans on toast, elevated by the woodland view from the window. As I tucked in, I had one of those quiet moments – you know, reflecting on how we pack our lives with noise back home, but here, five minutes from Salisbury's buzz, it's all stripped back. A small mishap-filled drive, sure, but it made this spot feel earned. If you're after a reset without the hassle, this is it. Can't wait to explore more tomorrow.
