About Wiltshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Wiltshire last month – me behind the wheel of our trusty old estate car, sat-nav chirping away like it knew better than I did. We’d set off from London full of beans, dreaming of cosy evenings by the fire, but about halfway there, disaster struck. A sudden downpour turned the M3 into a skating rink, and I managed to splash a full puddle right over a cyclist. Cue the guilty wave, a sheepish apology through the window, and my other half laughing so hard she nearly spilled her thermos of tea. “Smooth driving, champ,” she said. By the time we rolled into Salisbury, we were soaked but giggling, anticipation bubbling up as we spotted the premium two-bed holiday cottage nestled quietly on the outskirts.

First impressions? Blimey, it was spot on. A charming, modern-rustic spot perfect for us and the dog, with everything you’d need for a proper getaway – comfy beds, a cracking kitchen, and that pet-friendly vibe that meant no leaving Rufus behind. We dumped the bags, brewed a cuppa, and stepped out for our first wander, hearts light and Wiltshire’s rolling fields calling.

Day one dawned bright, so we laced up our boots for a cracking hike along the River Avon paths, just a stone’s throw from the cottage. The sun glinted off the water, cows mooing lazily in the meadows, and we spotted kingfishers darting about – proper picture-postcard stuff. Rufus bounded ahead, chasing shadows, while we ambled along at a gentle pace, chatting about nothing and everything. It felt like the world had slowed right down. We even detoured to a nearby wooded trail, crunching leaves underfoot, feeling like proper explorers without a care.

But oh, the British weather – it’s got a wicked sense of humour, hasn’t it? Next morning, grey clouds rolled in thick as thieves, and by breakfast, it was chucking it down. No way were we letting that dampen spirits, though. We kitted up in waterproofs and wellies for a muddy tramp across the water meadows towards the close-by Old Sarum hill fort. The rain lashed sideways, turning paths into streams, and I slipped once, landing bum-first in a puddle. “Graceful as ever,” I muttered to myself, hauling up with a grin. My other half just shook her head, but it was brilliant – that raw, elemental feel, wind whipping our faces, the ancient earth underfoot. We sheltered under a big oak for sandwiches, Rufus shaking himself like a wet mop, and reflected on how these soggy adventures beat a sunny beach any day. It’s those moments that stick, reminding you life’s too short for fair-weather plans.

The weather flipped again by afternoon – patches of blue sky peeking through – so we headed out for a shorter loop around Harnham’s marshy trails, spotting herons and breathing in that fresh, post-rain scent. Evenings back at the cottage were bliss: muddy boots by the door, drying off with hot chocolate, sharing stories of the day’s triumphs and tumbles.

Looking back, that week of Wiltshire walks – sun-soaked strides and rainy romps – was just what we needed. A gentle nudge to embrace the unpredictability, laugh off the slips, and keep putting one foot in front of the other. Can’t wait to go back.
