About Wiltshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Wiltshire last month – me behind the wheel of our trusty old hatchback, sat-nav chirping away like it owned the road, and my partner dozing in the passenger seat. We’d left London at dawn, full of beans about our long weekend in a cracking little premium two-bed holiday cottage just outside Salisbury. But about halfway there, disaster struck: a massive pothole on the A303 jolted us so hard the sat-nav flew off the dash and into a puddle of spilt coffee. Cue ten minutes of frantic faffing with paper maps while lorries thundered past. We arrived a tad later than planned, but honestly, pulling up to that cosy spot with its welcoming vibe made it all worthwhile. First impressions? Spot on – it felt like slipping into a favourite jumper, all neat and inviting.

The real star of the show, though, was the walking. Wiltshire’s got paths for days, and we’d packed our boots with big plans for hikes around the Harnham area, just a stone’s throw from the cottage. Day one dawned bright and crisp, perfect for a gentle ramble along the River Nadder. We followed the towpath out towards the water meadows, sheep eyeing us suspiciously as we crunched over frosty grass. The air was that proper fresh country stuff, and with Salisbury’s cathedral spire peeking in the distance, it felt like we’d stepped into a Constable painting. We even spotted a kingfisher darting over the water – magic. Lunch was a cheeky picnic of cheese ploughman’s from the local farm shop, scoffed on a log with not a soul around. Bliss.

But oh, the British weather – it’s got a wicked sense of humour, hasn’t it? Come afternoon, the sky turned that moody grey, and suddenly we were dodging sideways rain on the way back. Our planned longer loop via the old railway path got abbreviated sharpish; we legged it to the cottage, dripping like drowned rats and laughing our heads off. Sat by the fire with mugs of tea, I had a proper moment of reflection: how often do we city folk chase grand adventures, when these simple, soggy jaunts recharge the batteries best? It’s the unpredictability that makes it, really.

Next morning, undeterred, we tackled a stubbier hike up to the Harnham Slack, mud squelching underfoot after overnight drizzle. The views over the Avon Valley were worth every slip – rolling fields, buzzards wheeling overhead, and that earthy post-rain smell you can’t bottle. We adapted on the fly: when the clouds threatened again, we shortened it for a pub stop at the nearby Riverside, nursing pints of local bitter while the downpour hammered the windows. Back at the cottage by dusk, boots drying by the radiator, we felt properly alive.

By Sunday, the sun played nice for our finale – a breezy circuit through the water meadows at dawn, mist rising off the river like fairy dust. No mishaps, just pure contentment. Wiltshire walks taught us to roll with the weather punches, and that little cottage was the perfect base. If you’re after a reset, pack your wellies and go – you won’t regret it.
