About Wiltshire
Pulling up to the premium three-bed holiday home was a right treat, though. It’s one of those stylish, pet-friendly spots tucked away in a quiet corner, all cosy modern vibes with a garden that begs for a GandT at sunset. First impressions? Spot on. We dumped the bags, let the dog loose to sniff every blade of grass, and cracked open a bottle of fizz. Little did we know, the real magic was in getting properly lost over the next few days. Wiltshire’s got its famous spots, sure, but I’m all about those hidden gems you stumble on by accident. Day two, we decided on a “short” walk from the house – no map, just vibes. Ended up wandering off the beaten track through Harnham’s winding lanes, where the paths narrow to barely a foot wide and suddenly you’re in this secret meadow overlooking the River Nadder. Nobody there but us, a heron, and the hum of bees. We picnicked on cheese from the local farm shop (proper tangy cheddar, mind), feeling like we’d gatecrashed paradise. “How did we find this?” I said to my other half. She just grinned – serendipity, innit? Next morning, same story. Aiming for a quick dog walk near the Old Sarum hill fort ruins – you can see the ramparts from the garden, dead handy – we veered off down a bridleway that wasn’t on Google. Lost? Maybe a tad. But it spat us out at this tucked-away woodland glade by the Avon, carpeted in bluebells even in summer’s tail end. We spent hours there, skipping stones and chatting rubbish, the city stress melting away. I had one of those gentle moments, sitting on a fallen log, thinking how daft it is we spend so much time rushing about when getting lost like this recharges the soul. Afternoon jaunts led to more flukes: a forgotten orchard path behind the cathedral close, heavy with apples you could pluck for free; a shady nook by the water meadows where cows eyed us lazily as we skimmed pebbles. No crowds, no coach parties – just us, the dog chasing shadows, and that golden Wiltshire light. Evenings back at the house were bliss, firing up the barbecue and swapping tales of our “adventures.” Heading home, I felt oddly grateful for that initial sat-nav faff. Wiltshire’s off-the-beaten-path secrets aren’t signposted; you’ve got to lose yourself to find them. Can’t wait to go back and get lost all over again. |
