About Wiltshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Wiltshire last autumn – the leaves were turning that perfect mix of gold and rust, carpeting the roads like nature’s own welcome mat. I’d piled the kids and the dog into the car in high spirits, dreaming of cosy evenings by a crackling fire, but about halfway there, disaster struck: a puncture on the A303. Sat there on the hard shoulder with rain spitting on the windscreen, I was cursing my luck (politely, mind), wondering if the whole trip was jinxed. Half an hour and a very patient AA chap later, we were back on track, and honestly, that little hiccup just made the arrival all the sweeter.

Pulling up to the holiday home just outside Salisbury as the sun dipped low, painting the sky in those dramatic autumn hues, I felt that proper buzz of anticipation fizzle into pure delight. It’s a spacious four-bedroom place, modern and comfy with all the trimmings, including a cracking hot tub out back that promised to be our saviour after long walks. First impressions? Spot on. The garden was a riot of fallen leaves, crunchy underfoot, and the air had that crisp, apple-scented bite that screams British autumn.

We wasted no time settling in. Mornings started with steaming mugs of tea on the terrace, watching mist roll off the fields – you could almost taste the harvest in the breeze. The season shaped everything; those shorter days meant we were out early, tramping the nearby tracks around Old Sarum. The ancient hill fort ruins looked magical shrouded in low cloud, the wind whipping through the grass like it was whispering old secrets. The kids loved it, charging ahead with rosy cheeks, while I lagged behind, pretending I wasn’t knackered from the incline. Lunch was always a pub stop in the village – hearty ploughman’s with local cheddar that melted just right, paired with a pint of something amber and seasonal. Autumn ales, you see, with notes of chestnut and spice that hit the spot after a damp ramble.

Evenings were the real highlight, all thanks to that time of year. As dusk fell early, we’d fire up the wood burner (logs piled high, thankfully), and bubble in the hot tub under a blanket of stars peeking through the branches. The steam rising into the chilly air, steam off our cider mugs – pure bliss. One night, we even spotted a barn owl gliding silently past; the kids went wild, and I had one of those quiet moments, thinking how these simple, seasonal joys make you realise you don’t need fancy holidays. Just family, frost on the pumpkins, and nowhere to be.

We ventured to Salisbury’s close-by water meadows too, where the River Avon meandered lazily, fringed with turning willows. A gentle stroll there, kicking through leaves with the dog bounding ahead, felt like stepping into a Constable painting – all soft light and mellow colours. The autumn chill nipped at our fingers, but it sharpened everything: the crunch of conkers underfoot, the smoky scent from cottage chimneys.

Looking back, that Wiltshire weekend was autumn in a nutshell – bracing, beautiful, and a tad bittersweet as the days drew in. The mishap on the road faded fast, replaced by memories that’ll have us booking next year’s leaf-peeping trip before the ink’s dry. If you’re after a proper seasonal escape, this corner of England delivers in spades.
