About Wiltshire
I’d been buzzing with excitement for weeks about this little getaway to Wiltshire, picturing rolling hills and cosy evenings by a fire, but the drive down from London turned into a proper comedy of errors. Sat nav decided to have a midlife crisis just past Andover, rerouting us through some narrow lanes that felt more like tractor tracks than roads. Then, to top it off, we had a puncture – yes, a blooming flat tyre right in the middle of nowhere, with sheep eyeing us suspiciously from the verge. Me and the other half spent a sweaty half-hour wrestling with the jack, covered in mud and cursing our lack of practice. By the time we limped into the area near Salisbury, we were frazzled, late, and starving, but honestly, that anticipation had only ramped up – I could practically smell the fresh country air already.

Pulling up to the holiday lodge, though, it was love at first sight. Tucked away in a peaceful spot with views over the fields, it’s one of those modern-rustic setups that just screams relaxation – wooden cladding, a veranda for morning cups of tea, and that perfect size for two without feeling poky. The chaos of arrival melted away the second we stepped inside; it was spotless, warm, and welcoming, with big windows flooding the place with light. We dumped our bags, cracked open a bottle of wine (priority one after the tyre fiasco), and flopped onto the comfy sofa, grinning like idiots. First impressions? Bloody brilliant – way better than the tired BandBs we’ve done before.

The next morning, still riding that high, we wandered out for a gentle explore. It’s so handy being close to Salisbury – a short drive and we were pottering round the Close, dodging tourists at the cathedral (that spire never fails to impress). Grabbed a cream tea in a quaint café, naturally scones first with jam and clotted – proper Wiltshire style. Back at the lodge, we fired up the hot tub on the deck, bubbles and all, watching the sunset paint the hills pink. Pure bliss, especially after yesterday’s drama. I had a quiet moment there, sipping my gin, reflecting on how we’re always rushing about in the city – this was a reminder to slow down, breathe, and laugh off the mishaps.

We kept it local, popping to the nearby farm shop for local cheeses and pies that were absolute corkers. Evenings were for lazy barbecues on the veranda, stars popping out overhead, and a cheeky board game that always ends in giggles (and the occasional sulk). One night, a family of deer wandered right past – magic. Sure, the arrival was a shambles, but it made everything else shine brighter. If you’re after a fuss-free bolt-hole in Wiltshire’s heart, this is it – mishaps and all, it’s the kind of place that sticks with you. Can’t wait to go back.
