About Wiltshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Wiltshire last month – my wife and I, packed into the car like a couple of overexcited kids on their first school trip. We’d been dreaming about this little break for ages, escaping the daily grind for some proper cottage downtime. But of course, nothing goes smoothly for us. About halfway there, just past Andover, the sat nav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us on a detour through some narrow lanes that felt more like tractor tracks. We ended up stuck behind a combine harvester chugging along at snail’s pace, laughing our heads off as I pretended to honk the horn like a proper countryside fool. By the time we shook it off, we were both starving, but the anticipation was building – visions of rolling hills, fresh air, and no emails pinging at us.

Pulling up to the property, my heart did a little flip. Tucked away in a peaceful spot near Salisbury, this cosy lodge was everything we’d hoped: low-key and inviting, with that classic rural charm that makes you breathe easier the second you step out. Great first impressions – the garden was blooming with wildflowers, and there was this welcoming vibe that screamed ‘kick off your shoes and stay a while’.

We wasted no time settling in. First morning, we wandered over to the nearby arable fields for a gentle stroll, the kind where you stop every five minutes to admire a buzzard circling overhead or pick a few blackberries (well, until I got pricked and turned into a comedy whiner). Lunch was a simple picnic of cheese ploughman’s from the local farm shop – nothing fancy, but honestly, it tasted like heaven with that Wiltshire breeze. Afternoons blurred into lazy bliss: firing up the barbecue for sausages and a bit of al fresco lounging, or curling up inside with a pot of tea and a jigsaw puzzle that somehow ended up with 47 missing pieces. Cottage life chaos at its finest – we spent half an hour hunting for the cat flap key, only to find it in the fridge next to the milk.

Evenings were pure magic. We drove the short hop to Old Sarum for sunset views over the ancient hillfort ruins, holding hands like we were twenty again, then back for stargazing from the garden. No light pollution here; it was like the sky had put on a private show. One night, we even tried our hand at a campfire (safely, mind), toasting marshmallows until they were gloriously gooey and stuck to everything.

Looking back, it was those tiny moments that hit home – the quiet joy of no rush, just us two pottering about, rediscovering what matters amid the gentle mayhem. I caught myself smiling at how daft we can be, bickering over who makes better scrambled eggs, yet feeling utterly content. If you’re after a relaxed family-couple escape, Wiltshire’s got that in spades. We’re already plotting our return.
