About Herefordshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Aconbury last month – we’d packed the car with enough cheese and crisps to see us through a siege, but halfway there, just past the M50, the satnav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us on a scenic detour through some narrow lanes that had me white-knuckling the wheel. “Are we lost or on an adventure?” my other half quipped, as we bounced over a pothole. Turned out it was both, but we arrived just as the sun dipped low, buzzing with that proper holiday anticipation – you know, the kind where you imagine cracking open a bottle of something chilled while the world slows down.

First impressions? Blimey, what a spot. This enchanting little lodge sits right in the heart of Aconbury, a sleepy hamlet surrounded by 630 acres of farmland and woodland. It’s got that cosy, welcoming vibe, with well-marked footpaths snaking off for gentle strolls if you fancy working off a big lunch. We dumped the bags and headed straight to the kitchen, already plotting our feast.

Food’s what made this trip, honestly. Hereford’s only 5.5 miles away, so our first outing was a beeline there for the market. It’s a proper bustling affair on Wednesdays and Saturdays – stalls heaving with fresh veg, artisan breads, and cheeses that could make you weep. I nabbed some plump tomatoes, local cider apples, and a wedge of Herefordshire beef that promised to melt in the pan. Back at the lodge, I fancied myself a MasterChef, firing up the hob for a steak and ale pie. Spoiler: it was more pie-shaped than pastry perfection, with the gravy going a bit rogue and flooding the plate. We laughed it off with a bottle of local scrumpy, toasting my “rustic” efforts. Self-reflection moment: maybe I should stick to eating rather than cooking next time.

Evenings called for pubs, naturally. There’s a cracking one just a short drive away in the village, the kind with low ceilings and locals who greet you like old mates. Pints of Wye Valley ale – crisp, hoppy, and dangerously drinkable – paired with plates of fish and chips or gammon steaks sourced from nearby farms. One night, we tried the ploughman’s: mature cheddar, pickled onions, and crusty bread that was still warm. Pure bliss.

We kept it local for brekkies too, stocking up on eggs from Oakchurch Farm Shop (a quick 14.5-mile hop, worth every minute) and bacon from Pengethley Nurseries, about 8 miles off. Scrambled eggs on toast, fried up with black pudding and a dollop of their homemade chutney – simple, but it tasted like heaven after a morning amble along the footpaths. No need for grand days out when you’ve got this larder of delights on your doorstep.

By the end of the week, we’d devoured enough local grub to need those woodland walks just to loosen the belt. If you’re after a holiday where the highlights are hearty meals, market hauls, and a few culinary cock-ups, this Herefordshire lodge is your spot. Roll on the next one – minus the satnav drama.
