About Herefordshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to that barn in Herefordshire – what was meant to be a straightforward jaunt from the motorway turned into a comedy of errors. Satnav insisted on taking us through some winding lanes that seemed to get narrower by the second, and just as we were congratulating ourselves on spotting the first black-and-white cottages, we hit a proper Herefordshire downpour. Cue the windscreen wipers on full pelt and me squinting at signs that looked like they’d been designed by a drunk cartographer. Then, the pièce de résistance: a rogue sheep decided our route was prime grazing spot and parked itself bang in the middle of the road. We sat there, engine idling, honking gently while it gave us a disdainful stare before ambling off. By the time we pulled up, we were laughing so hard my cheeks hurt, soaked through from a dash to the gate, but buzzing with that proper holiday anticipation.

Stepping inside, though, it was love at first sight. This cosy barn conversion felt like it had been waiting just for us – all warm and welcoming with that lived-in charm you don’t get from sterile hotels. The open-plan space opened right up to a cracking kitchen where we dumped our bags and cracked open a bottle of local cider (Herefordshire’s no slouch on that front). First impressions? Spot on. Sun was peeking through the clouds by then, casting a golden glow over the garden that stretched out towards the rolling countryside. We could already picture lazy mornings with coffee on the patio, listening to birdsong instead of traffic.

That evening, we wandered out for a gentle explore, following one of those criss-crossing footpaths that snake through the landscape here. Mortimer’s Trail was literally on our doorstep – we joined it for a short stretch, meandering past ancient hedgerows and fields dotted with sheep that, thankfully, stayed put this time. It’s the sort of place where you feel miles from anywhere, yet Pembridge village is just a pleasant half-hour stroll away, with its timber-framed houses straight out of a postcard. We popped into the pub there for a pint and some proper pie, chatting with locals about the black-and-white village trail that hits Eardisland and Weobley next. Pure bliss, that unhurried pace.

The next day, we hired bikes from a spot nearby and tackled some easy off-road tracks – nothing too gruelling, just enough to work up an appetite for a riverside picnic by the Wye. Kayaking crossed our minds, but with the weather still a bit iffy, we saved that for another visit. Leominster’s market was calling too, only a quick drive away, brimming with fresh produce and antiques that had me eyeing up a quirky vase I definitely didn’t need.

Looking back, that chaotic arrival was the perfect icebreaker. It reminded me how the best holidays aren’t flawless Instagram reels, but these real, messy moments that stick with you. Herefordshire’s got that magic – tucked in the Shropshire and Welsh borders, it’s a haven for walkers, cyclists, and anyone craving a breather. We left with muddy boots, full bellies, and plans to return. If you’re after a spot to unplug and recharge, this is it.
