About Herefordshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Herefordshire last month – what should’ve been a straightforward two hours from the Midlands turned into a comedy of errors when we hit a massive queue on the A49 thanks to a rogue sheep blocking the road. There I was, tapping the steering wheel, dreaming of cosy countryside escapes, while my other half cracked jokes about becoming shepherds ourselves. But as we finally wound our way into the quiet hamlet of Twyford, all that stress melted away. Spotting the sleek barn conversion nestled among the fields, my heart did a little flip – it looked every bit the tranquil hideaway I’d been craving.

Stepping inside, we were hit with those great first impressions: airy, modern vibes with everything you need for a proper unwind. No fuss, just perfect for us two. We couldn’t wait to lace up our boots and hit the footpaths right on the doorstep. Herefordshire’s countryside is made for walkers like me, who fancy a gentle ramble one minute and a proper hike the next. First day, the sun was out, bold as brass, so we set off along the quiet lanes, acres of farmland stretching out like a green patchwork quilt. The air was crisp, alive with birdsong, and we meandered past hedgerows bursting with blackberries – free snacks courtesy of nature. It felt like we’d stepped into a postcard, peaceful and utterly restorative.

But oh, the British weather – it’s got a wicked sense of humour, doesn’t it? Come afternoon, the sky turned that moody grey, and suddenly we were dodging fat raindrops on a scenic footpath that hugged the edge of some rolling fields. No proper waterproofs packed (classic me), so we hunkered down under a handy tree, laughing at our soggy selves while the downpour drummed overhead. It forced a rethink – instead of pushing on to a viewpoint we’d spotted on the map, we looped back for tea and cake in the barn, watching the rain lash the windows. Honestly, it was a blessing in disguise; that forced pause let us chat properly, something we never do at home.

Next morning, the weather played nice again, luring us out for a longer hike along lanes that dipped into little valleys. We clocked up a good five miles, the mud underfoot a reminder of yesterday’s soaking. But when the clouds gathered mid-stride – cue dramatic thunder – we adapted sharpish, ducking into a nearby market town for a pub lunch. Ross-on-Wye’s just a short hop away, and its characterful streets were a treat, dripping with that welcoming Herefordshire charm. The rain held off just long enough for a riverside stroll along the Wye, the water rushing past like it was in a hurry we didn’t share.

Reflecting on it now, those weather-whipped walks were the highlight. They taught me to embrace the unpredictability – no grand plans, just you, the paths, and whatever the sky throws at you. Back home, life feels a tad greyer without those Twyford trails. If you’re after a spot to switch off and let the hikes (rain or shine) recharge your soul, this is it. We’re already plotting a return.
