About Herefordshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Herefordshire last month – my wife and I, the kids in the back, arguing over the playlist while the satnav kept trying to send us on a scenic detour through some farmer’s field. We’d packed the car to bursting with board games, wellies, and enough crisps to siege a castle, but about halfway there, disaster struck: a rogue crisp packet exploded in the boot, leaving a cheesy blizzard everywhere. By the time we pulled up to our barn conversion near Moccas, we were laughing like idiots, covered in orange dust and buzzing with that proper holiday anticipation.

First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first sight. Tucked away in the rolling Herefordshire countryside, this characterful spot felt like a hug from the landscape itself – all cosy nooks and that effortless charm that screams “relax here forever”. We tumbled out, kids racing ahead, and within minutes we were brewing tea on the Aga, windows flung open to the fresh air humming with birdsong. No traffic noise, no emails pinging – just us, a couple of mugs, and the promise of proper downtime.

We kept things dead simple, embracing that cottage life chaos in the best way. Mornings kicked off with lazy brekkies of scrambled eggs and toast, the little ones making a right mess but who cares? A short hop down the lane and we were paddling in the River Wye, canoeing gently along its glassy bends. The water’s so clear you spot fish darting about, and there’s this peaceful rhythm to it – dip the paddle, glide, repeat. One afternoon, we had a classic dad-fail moment: I tipped us all into a shallow bit trying to impress with a fancy turn, emerging like drowned otters but giggling non-stop. The kids declared it the highlight.

For a bit of gentle exploring, we wandered the nearby paths around Moccas, picking blackberries and pretending we were proper foragers. The countryside’s alive here – buttery fields, ancient hedges, and those big skies that make you feel small in the nicest way. One evening, we packed a picnic and watched the sun dip behind the hills, cheese and biscuits in hand, while the kids built fairy houses from sticks. Pure magic, that.

It wasn’t all smooth sailing, mind. The first night, we couldn’t figure the quirky old heating, shivering under blankets like it was midwinter, but it led to the coziest family huddle watching a film on the sofa. Made me reflect a bit, actually – in the rush of daily life, we forget these simple joys: no agenda, just being together, mud on our boots and smiles on our faces. Herefordshire worked its spell on us, stripping away the noise for a proper reset. If you’re after a chilled family break with a side of countryside bliss, this is your spot. We’re already plotting a return.
