About Herefordshire
We’d planned walking routes galore, with the Black Mountains right on our doorstep. Day one dawned bright, so we laced up and headed for Arthur’s Stone, that ancient Neolithic burial chamber up on the hilltop. It’s only a couple of miles from the village, but the climb had us puffing – rewarding us with jaw-dropping valley views. My other half was snapping photos like a pro, while the kids raced ahead, turning it into a treasure hunt. We picnicked there, cheese rolls and thermos tea, feeling like proper explorers. Humour crept in when I slipped on a muddy patch (early days!), coating my jeans in glorious Herefordshire muck. “Fashion forward,” I quipped, and we all cracked up. British weather, though – it’s got a mind of its own. Next morning, the skies turned moody, proper grey and drizzly, scuppering our big Black Mountains trek. No point fighting it, so we adapted with a shorter loop closer to home, through those timeless rural paths winding past hedgerows and babbling streams. The rain held off just enough, and there’s something magical about a damp walk, isn’t there? Mist clinging to the hills, that fresh earthy smell – it felt more authentic than any sunny stroll. We even spotted a fox darting across the trail, which had the dog going bonkers. By afternoon, it cleared up, teasing us out again for an evening potter around the village edges. But the real pivot came mid-week: lashing rain turned our ambitious hike into a riverside amble near Brobury House, just 5.5 miles off. Those eight acres of gardens were a revelation – sodden paths through dripping trees, the River Wye murmuring alongside. We didn’t fancy canoeing in that downpour (wise heads prevailed), but splashing through puddles with the dog, hoods up, felt like the best kind of adventure. The kids invented a game of “puddle-jump champion,” and I won by default when they tired out. Looking back, those weather-whipped walks were the highlight. They forced us to slow down, chat more, laugh at the soggy chaos. I caught myself reflecting one evening, tea in hand by the cottage window, how we’re all guilty of over-planning holidays. Here, with the hills calling and the rain dictating the rhythm, we just went with it – and it was perfect. If you’re after a spot to unplug in Herefordshire, this is it. Proper restorative stuff. |
