About Herefordshire
I’ll never forget the drive to our little holiday spot in Herefordshire – a proper scenic route that had me buzzing with that holiday anticipation, you know, windows down, radio on, dreaming of cosy evenings by the fire. My partner and I, just the two of us for a rare child-free break, were trundling along from Hay-on-Wye when disaster struck: a rogue sheep decided our lane was its personal catwalk. I slammed on the brakes just in time, heart thumping, as it ambled across with not a care in the world, followed by a couple of its woolly mates. We burst out laughing – typical countryside chaos, and a reminder that nature doesn’t do sat-navs.

Ten minutes later, we pulled up to this stunning farmhouse nestled among miles of rolling countryside in the Black Mountains. The first impressions? Breathtaking. It stretched out ahead like something from a postcard, remote enough to feel worlds away, yet close to Hay’s charming bookshops. We stepped inside, bags barely dropped, and it was love at first sight – that perfect blend of rural charm and homely comfort, ideal for us two to unwind.

Our days fell into this gloriously lazy rhythm of simple pleasures. Mornings started with brews in hand, watching wild horses graze in the fields from the window – no alarm clocks needed. We’d potter out for walks right from the door, those Black Mountains paths winding up through heather and bracken, stopping for impromptu picnics with cheese from a local farm shop. One afternoon, we hired bikes from Hay and tackled a gentle trail – nothing too hardcore, just enough puff to earn a slice of cake back in town. Hay itself was a gem, that old market town vibe with its endless bookshops; we lost hours browsing, picking up dog-eared novels for bedtime reading.

Evenings were pure cottage bliss, though not without a spot of chaos. I tried my hand at a roast using the Aga – big mistake. Smoke alarms blaring, we ended up with slightly charred spuds and a good giggle over fish and chips from the pub instead. Sat outside as the sun dipped, sipping wine, it hit me: these little mishaps are what make it real. Life back home is all rush and to-do lists; here, it’s about breathing, being daft together, and savouring the quiet. We popped over to Hergest Croft Gardens one day, wandering hand-in-hand through the rhododendrons, feeling properly refreshed.

A gentle self-reflection crept in on our last morning: we’d arrived frazzled from work, but left lighter, closer. Herefordshire’s magic isn’t grand adventures; it’s this unhurried cottage life, wild sheep and all. If you’re after a relaxed couple’s escape, book it – you won’t regret the detour.
