About Herefordshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Herefordshire last weekend – what was meant to be a straightforward jaunt from the Midlands turned into a comedy of errors. Sat-nav insisted on taking us through some winding back lanes that felt like they hadn’t seen a car since the war, and just as we neared Kington, the heavens opened. Rain hammered the windscreen so hard I could barely see, and then – splash! – we hit a massive puddle that soaked the dog in the back seat. Poor old Rufus shook himself dry all over the luggage, turning our neatly packed boot into a soggy mess. By the time we pulled up to the holiday cottage, we were damp, dishevelled, and debating whose fault it was (spoiler: it was mine for trusting the tech).

But stepping through the door? Pure magic. Set right in the heart of a beautifully restored estate, surrounded by lush, well-managed farmland, it felt like we’d stumbled into a slice of countryside heaven. The cottage itself is cosy and characterful, with everything you need for a proper unwind – think welcoming open-plan living space, a kitchen that begged for lazy breakfasts, and bedrooms that wrapped you up like a hug. First impressions? Spot on. From the garden views straight out to rolling fields, it screamed ‘ideal base for keen walkers and dog lovers’, and with a network of waymarked paths literally on the doorstep, Rufus was in seventh heaven, nose to the ground before we’d even unpacked.

We shook off the arrival chaos with a cuppa, then ventured out for a gentle stroll along those paths – the fresh air hit like a reset button, washing away the road woes. Herefordshire’s got that unspoiled charm; within minutes, we were spotting sheep and buzzards, the kind of peaceful that makes you breathe deeper. Keen to explore locally, we pottered into Kington, just a stone’s throw away, for a mooch around its independent shops and a cheeky pasty from the bakery. Leominster’s antique and curiosity shops were calling too – only a short drive, and we bagged a quirky old teapot that’s now pride of place on the mantel. But the real highlight? Ludlow, that thriving medieval market town, a foodie’s dream. We timed it for their regular local produce market, stuffing our faces with artisan cheeses, fresh bread, and pies that melted in the mouth. Dinner at one of the excellent restaurants – not quite Michelin-starred for our budget, but blooming close – was the perfect end to the day, with plates of local game and veg that tasted like they’d been picked that morning.

Reflecting on it now, that messy arrival was a blessing in disguise. It made the calm of the cottage hit even harder, reminding me how daft it is to let a bit of rain ruin the vibe. We spent the rest of the weekend walking, scoffing, and chilling, with Rufus grinning like he’d won the lottery. If you’re after a proper Herefordshire escape – paths, pubs, and all – this corner’s got it in spades. Can’t wait to go back, minus the puddle next time.
