About Herefordshire
I’ll never forget the drive to Kington – that cheeky little Herefordshire village tucked away in the hills. We’d set off from home full of beans, Spotify blasting some indie folk tunes to match the rolling countryside, but about halfway there, disaster struck. The sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly, rerouting us down a narrow lane that was more pothole than path. My partner was gripping the dashboard like it was a lifeline, and I was muttering about how Google Maps had betrayed us. We ended up doing a three-point turn in a field gateway, with a couple of bemused sheep watching the show. Classic us – turning a two-hour jaunt into a mini adventure. But as we finally crested the hill into Kington, hearts racing a bit, the anticipation kicked in. There it was, our bolthole: a cosy studio-style flat on the ground floor of this old Victorian schoolhouse from the early 1800s, right in the heart of the village.

Climbing those steps through the owner’s multi-level garden felt like stepping into a secret world – all lush borders and birdsong, with the promise of Bradnor Hill looming invitingly in the distance. We tumbled through the door, still laughing about our road woes, and straight into the kitchen-diner. First impressions? Blimey, it was spot on. I plonked the kettle on immediately – nothing says “we’ve arrived” like a proper builder’s brew after that drive. The space is compact but clever, with everything you need to rustle up a feast. We unpacked amid the chaos of bags everywhere, and I had a proper moment of self-reflection while stirring my tea: why do we always pack like we’re off on expedition? Half our stuff stayed in the cases untouched. It’s those little realisations that make a holiday, isn’t it?

The sitting area next door sealed the deal – a plush sofa begging us to flop down, telly ready for a lazy film night, and those windows framing views of the countryside that had me grinning like a kid. You could practically feel the walks calling: Kington’s bang in the centre of some cracking routes, like the one up to Whitley Tump or along the arrow-straight Offa’s Dyke path just a stone’s throw away. We didn’t waste time; after a quick tidy-up (more arrival mayhem with a rogue suitcase toppling over), we headed out for a gentle evening stroll around the village. Kington’s got that proper sleepy charm – the old market square, a pint at the Swan or the Cheese Market if you fancy, and locals who nod hello like you’re one of them already.

That first evening, we cooked up pasta with whatever we’d grabbed from the local Spar – nothing fancy, but romantic enough with candles flickering on the dining table. Sat there gazing at the hill beyond, I thought how perfect it was for recharging. The mishaps just made it better, turning potential stress into stories we’ll retell for years. If you’re after a base to explore Herefordshire’s green heart – think gentle hikes, fresh air, and zero pretension – this is it. We left buzzing, already plotting a return.
