About Herefordshire
I set off from Birmingham on a drizzly Friday morning, buzzing with that holiday anticipation where you imagine cracking open a book by the fire and forgetting the world exists. The sat-nav had other ideas, though—halfway down the A449, it decided to chuck a wobbly and sent me on a merry detour through some narrow lanes that felt more like tractor tracks. I ended up in a muddy layby, laughing at myself while scraping cow muck off the tyres. Classic me, turning a two-hour drive into three. But as I finally wound into Hardwicke, near Hay-on-Wye, the stress melted away. The rolling Herefordshire hills opened up, all lush green and sheep-dotted, and there it was: this charming former coach house from the early 1800s, looking every bit the cosy hideaway I'd been dreaming of.

First impressions? Spot on. The place had that lived-in welcome, with a garden that stretched out like an invitation to do absolutely nothing. I dumped the bags, brewed a pot of tea in the homely kitchen-diner—properly kitted out with everything you need for lazy self-catering—and just breathed it in. No rush, no plans. That's the joy of it, isn't it? After months of rushing about, this was my permission slip to slow right down.

The days blurred into the best kind of nothing. Mornings started late, with birdsong filtering through the windows as I pottered in the kitchen, knocking up simple brekkies like scrambled eggs on toast. Then it was garden time: sprawling out on a lounger with a mug of coffee, watching butterflies flit about the wildflowers. The garden's a proper suntrap, framed by hedges that keep the world at bay. I'd lose hours there, feet up, flicking through a dog-eared paperback—some detective novel I'd been meaning to read for ages. No deadlines, no emails pinging. Just the rustle of pages and the odd bee buzzing by.

Afternoons were for even less. A gentle wander down the lane to stretch the legs, maybe picking blackberries if they were ripe, then back for lunch alfresco. Evenings? Pure bliss. Snuggled on the plush seating by the woodburning stove (we got it going on night one, flames dancing like they were putting on a show), with the TV murmuring in the background. Upstairs, the bedrooms were quaint and comfy—a super-king that swallowed you whole, and a family room with a double and single for when mates tag along. Sleep came easy, deep and uninterrupted.

One evening, staring at the stars from the garden (they're ridiculous out here, no light pollution), I had a proper moment of self-reflection. Life's so frantic back home—work, chores, the lot. Here, doing sod all felt revolutionary. I caught myself grinning like an idiot, realising I'd needed this more than I knew. No grand adventures, no ticking off lists. Just lazy cottage days, recharging in the quiet heart of Herefordshire. If you're after the same, pack a book and come. You won't regret it.
