About Herefordshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Herefordshire last month – me behind the wheel of our trusty old estate car, sat-nav chirping away like it owned the road, and my partner fiddling with the playlist. We’d been buzzing with anticipation, dreaming of lazy countryside rambles and proper fresh air after months cooped up in the city. But about 20 minutes from our turning, disaster struck: a rogue pheasant decided to play chicken with the bonnet. Feathers everywhere, heart in my mouth, and a quick pull-over to check for damage. Miraculously, just a scratch and some shaken nerves. “Rural welcome committee,” I joked, as we laughed it off and pressed on.

Pulling up to the place felt like stumbling into a hug from an old mate. Elevated on the first floor above the donkey stables next to the owner’s home, it had this perfect, tucked-away vibe – just what we needed for a rural getaway. Stepping inside, the open-plan space hit us with floods of natural light through those big Velux windows, and we immediately flopped onto the plush green sofa with a couple of glasses of wine. First impressions? Spot on. The kitchen’s black granite worktops and quality kit meant we could knock up a decent romantic supper without faffing about. Bliss.

We’d packed our walking boots with big plans for Herefordshire’s rolling hills – thinking crisp autumn days and golden light. Day one dawned bright, so we headed out for a gentle hike around Bishop’s Frome, just 3.4 miles away. The paths wound through apple orchards heavy with fruit, the air thick with that earthy, damp scent you only get in the proper countryside. We ambled past sleepy farms, spotting donkeys (cheeky nod to our loft, that) and even a fox darting into the hedgerows. It was pure magic, the kind of walk that makes you breathe deeper and chat about nothing and everything.

But oh, the British weather – it’s got a wicked sense of humour, hasn’t it? By day two, the skies turned moody, and what was meant to be a longer tramp over to the nearby woods became a comedy of errors. Fat raindrops started as we crested a hill, turning the tracks into slippy slides. We dashed for cover under a massive oak, hoods up, giggling like kids as the downpour hammered down. Plans B, C, and D kicked in: a soggy picnic on a bench in the village, then retreating to the sofa for hot tea and a board game. It forced us to slow down, you know? Made me reflect a bit – I’m always rushing, chasing the next thing, but getting drenched together reminded me that the best bits of a holiday aren’t ticked-off lists, they’re the soggy, shared stories.

Next morning, the sun peeked out, teasing us for round three. We stuck closer to home, looping the fields around the property – elevated views for miles, wind whipping our cheeks, mud caking our boots. Even the donkeys below seemed to cheer us on with their brays. By the end of the week, we’d notched up a good 20 miles of hiking, weather be damned. Herefordshire’s got this unpretentious charm; it doesn’t mind if you get wet, as long as you show up for the adventure. We drove home muddy, knackered, and utterly content – already plotting the next rainy ramble.
