About Herefordshire
I finally made it to Herefordshire after what felt like the scenic route from hell – well, not hell, but definitely a detour involving a flock of sheep blocking the lane just outside Ledbury. Sat there for 20 minutes, engine off, watching the farmer coax them along with his dog, thinking, "This is either the start of a proper British holiday or a sign to turn back." But no, I pressed on, windows down, breathing in that fresh countryside air laced with the faint tang of cider orchards. By the time I crested the hill towards Hereford, my shoulders were already loosening.

Pulling up to the cottage, I had this buzz of anticipation – you know, that "what if it's rubbish?" niggle – but blimey, first impressions were spot on. It's one of those cosy, traditional farm-style places tucked away in a quiet spot near Hereford, with a garden that just invites you to flop down and forget the world. No grand entrance, just a welcoming porch and that immediate sense of "home for the week."

From the off, I decided this holiday was all about doing bugger all – and it was bliss. Mornings started late, with a cuppa on the patio as the sun filtered through the trees, birds chirping away like they were auditioning for Springwatch. The garden's a proper gem: lush lawn rolling down to a little wildflower patch, a couple of weathered benches perfect for perching with a book. I devoured two paperbacks that first day – one thriller I couldn't put down, the other some gentle memoir that had me nodding along. No rushing to tick off sights; Hereford's close enough for a wander if I fancied, maybe a mooch round the cathedral close or a pint in a pub yard, but mostly I stayed put.

Afternoons blurred into lazy hazes. I'd stretch out on a lounger with a flask of tea, watching clouds drift over the hills. One day, I managed a gentle potter to the end of the garden, picking a few herbs for a simple lunch – cheese on toast elevated to gourmet status. The joy of it was the slowing down, that rare luxury of time stretching out. No emails pinging, no deadlines lurking. Just me, the hum of bees, and the occasional tractor rumbling by in the distance.

There was a moment, mid-week, sat there with my feet up, when I caught myself grinning at nothing. Self-reflection time: life's usually a mad dash – work, kids' football, the weekly shop – but here, doing very little felt like achievement. Who knew idleness could be so restorative? I even laughed at my packed suitcase; brought hiking boots "just in case," and they stayed unlaced the whole time.

Evenings were for unwinding properly: a GandT from the local offy (Hereford's got cracking independent shops), supper rustled up from the basics, then curling up by the fire with the radio on. No TV binge, just the crackle and a good ponder. Leaving felt bittersweet – that sheep jam seemed a lifetime ago. If you're after proper recharge, find a spot like this. Do sod all. You'll thank me.
