About Herefordshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Herefordshire last month – me behind the wheel of our battered old estate car, sat-nav chirping away like it owned the road, and my other half dozing in the passenger seat. We’d been dreaming of this holiday let for weeks, a cosy little detached cottage just outside Kington, perfect for some proper countryside walks. But about 20 miles out, disaster struck: a rogue pheasant decided to play chicken with our front bumper. Thump! Feathers everywhere, heart in my mouth, and we pulled over to check for damage. Miraculously, just a dent and some ruffled pride. “Well,” I laughed to my partner as we carried on, “that’s one way to arrive with a story.”

Pulling up to the cottage as the sun dipped low, I felt that proper buzz of anticipation – you know, that tingle when you spot the place and think, yeah, this is going to be spot on. It’s one of those classic rural boltholes, all welcoming and snug, with views that make you grin before you’ve even unpacked. First impressions? Bloody brilliant – or rather, absolutely smashing. We dumped the bags, brewed a cuppa, and planned our first hike for the morning.

Day one dawned crisp and clear, ideal for tackling Offa’s Dyke Path, that ancient earthwork snaking right past the cottage. We set off along the trail towards Hergest Ridge, boots crunching on frosty grass, the air so fresh it nearly knocked us sideways. Panoramic views over rolling hills and patchwork fields – pure magic. We picnicked by a dew-kissed stile, chatting about nothing and everything, feeling like proper explorers. Herefordshire’s walks are second to none for that; close enough to wander from the door, yet wild enough to make you feel miles from anywhere.

But oh, the British weather – it’s got a wicked sense of humour, hasn’t it? Come afternoon, clouds rolled in like uninvited guests, and by evening, proper drizzle set in. Our plan for a sunset stroll to nearby Bradnor Hill went out the window. Instead, we hunkered down by the fire (logs courtesy of the hosts), nursing mugs of tea and chuckling about how we’d hyped ourselves up for epic treks only to be foiled by a bit of wet. “Typical us,” I said, reflecting on my lifelong dance with optimism versus reality. I’ve always been the one packing shorts for a Bank Holiday weekend, only to end up in full waterproofs. It’s a gentle reminder, isn’t it? Life’s adventures don’t always follow the script, but that’s what makes them memorable.

Next day, the rain had buggered off, so we laced up again for a loop around Disgustling Hill – shorter but steeper, with mud that tested our ankles and rewarded us with unexpected valley glimpses. Evenings brought more moody skies, forcing indoor downtime, but we’d venture out anyway in cagoules, splashing through puddles on the lower paths near the cottage. One blustery afternoon, hail pelted down mid-hike, turning us into giggling wrecks as we dashed for shelter under a tree. “Who needs the Med?” we yelled over the wind.

By the end of the week, we’d clocked miles of Herefordshire’s finest trails, weather be damned. Those changeable skies kept us on our toes, mixing bold rambles with cosy retreats. It was the perfect reset – a bit of huffing up hills, a lot of laughing at the elements, and that quiet satisfaction of knowing we’d made the most of it. If you’re after walks that shift with the breeze, this corner of England’s your spot. We’re already plotting a return.
