About Herefordshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Herefordshire last month – what was meant to be a straightforward jaunt from the M50 turned into a comedy of errors thanks to my rubbish sense of direction. Satnav decided to play silly buggers halfway through, directing me down a narrow lane that narrowed into a muddy track, and before I knew it, I was stuck behind a flock of sheep being herded by a farmer on a quad bike. There I was, engine idling, sheep staring at me like I was the intruder, and me panicking about being late for check-in. I ended up reversing half a mile with a line of tractors queuing up behind – proper British countryside farce. By the time I extricated myself, I was laughing at my own daftness, covered in crisp crumbs from stress-munching, and questioning why I hadn’t just packed a compass.

Finally rolling up to the holiday lodge near Kington, heart still thumping from the sheep saga, I was braced for disappointment. But honestly, first impressions? Absolute belter. Tucked away in a peaceful spot with views over rolling fields, it was one of those cosy wooden lodges that just screams “relax here”. The anticipation had been building all week – emails from the owners promising hot tub vibes and fresh eggs from their chickens – but pulling into that gravel drive felt like arriving at a secret hideaway. The key safe clicked open first time (phew, no more mishaps), and stepping inside, I was hit with that warm, welcoming glow from the underfloor heating. It was compact but perfect: open-plan living with a kitchen that had every gadget going, plush sofas begging for a collapse, and huge windows framing the Herefordshire hills. I dumped my bags and just stood there grinning like an idiot.

That first evening set the tone perfectly. After the road chaos, I cracked open a bottle of local cider – picked up from a farm shop en route – and fired up the hot tub on the deck. Bubbling away under a starry sky, with nothing but birdsong and distant cows for company, it was pure bliss. Next morning, still buzzing from the great first impressions, I wandered the short path to the owners’ farm just down the lane. Fresh eggs and homemade jam for brekkie? Yes please. We ambled around their smallholding, chatting about lambing season, then took a gentle stroll along the nearby Offa’s Dyke path – that ancient earthwork right on the doorstep, with views into Wales that make you feel properly away from it all.

Looking back, that messy arrival was the best bit – a reminder that holidays aren’t about flawless plans, but those unexpected stories you end up retelling with a chuckle. Herefordshire’s got this unpretentious charm, and this lodge captured it spot on: simple, serene, and surprisingly luxurious. If you’re after a proper unwind without the crowds, it’s a gem. Already plotting a return, minus the sheep standoff.
