About Herefordshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Herefordshire – one of those classic British road trips where the satnav decides to have a midlife crisis just as you’re weaving through the lanes near Ledbury. We’d packed the car with enough books, crisps, and mismatched picnic gear to last a siege, buzzing with that pre-holiday anticipation of escaping the daily grind. But no, ten miles from our turning, it reroutes us into a muddy farm track that had us sliding about like we were in a low-budget rally. A quick reverse and a sheepish laugh later, we were back on track, hearts racing a bit more than planned.

Pulling up to the cottage, though, it was love at first sight. This family-friendly spot is proper spacious, tucked away in peaceful surroundings that scream ‘slow down and breathe’. The kind of place that’s an ideal base for touring if you fancy it, but honestly, who needs to when paradise is right here? We tumbled out, bags in hand, grinning at the enclosed garden stretching out behind – table, chairs, and a BBQ all primed for lazy evenings under those endless rural skies.

First impressions? Spot on. The well-equipped kitchen had every gadget imaginable for rustling up meals for a crowd (we were six, but it could easily handle more), plus a utility room and ground-floor cloakroom that made unpacking a doddle. That lovely dining room flows straight into the spacious sitting room, perfect for sprawling out. Upstairs, three attractive bedrooms and a bathroom kept everyone happy – no squabbles over space.

But the real joy? Doing sod all, in the best possible way. Herefordshire has its charms – a gentle stroll to the local pub for a pint of cider, maybe a potter around the nearby orchards if the fancy took us – but we barely stirred. Mornings kicked off with coffee in the garden, watching mist lift off the fields while the kids (and let’s face it, the adults) zoned out with books. I devoured a battered paperback I’d been meaning to read for months, feet up on a chair, the sun warming my face. Lunch was a faff-free affair: cheeseboard from the village shop, eaten al fresco as bees hummed lazily around the lavender.

Afternoons melted into dozing under the shade of a big old tree, or firing up the BBQ for sausages and a bit of gentle charring – nothing fancy, just that smoky scent drifting on the breeze. Evenings brought cards round the table, laughter echoing as the light faded, swapping stories with a glass of something chilled. One night, I caught myself staring at the stars, thinking how daft it is that we pack our lives so full back home. Why rush? This was my gentle nudge: life’s too short not to savour these pocket-sized moments of nothing.

We did pop out once, to a farm shop a couple of miles away for fresh eggs and fudge, but mostly it was garden lounging and reading marathons. Slowing down suited us down to the ground – recharged, relaxed, and already plotting a return. If you’re after a Herefordshire haven to switch off, this is it. Pure bliss.
