About Herefordshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Herefordshire last month – what was meant to be a straightforward jaunt from the M5 turned into a comedy of errors thanks to my dodgy sat-nav. It kept insisting we take a “shortcut” through some winding B-road that felt more like a sheep track, and just as we were nearing Hereford, I misjudged a pothole and ended up with a wobbly wheel that had me pulling over in a layby, heart racing, convinced we’d be changing a tyre in the pouring rain. Turned out it was just a loose hubcap – phew – but by the time we’d faffed about sorting it, we were both starving and snippy, dreaming of a cuppa and a sit-down.

Still, as we trundled up to the electronic gates of this private estate just a few miles from Hereford, anticipation bubbled up. I’d been buzzing about this getaway for weeks, picturing cosy evenings after pottering about the Wye Valley. Punching in the code (thank goodness it worked first time), we crunched onto the large gravel driveway past the owner’s home, Beechcroft, and parked in our designated spot. Spotting the other holiday lets dotted around made it feel like a proper little community, tucked away yet handy for everything.

Stepping into the place – a cracking 19th-century converted stables from the 1860s, all on one ground floor – my jaw dropped. It’s spacious, high-quality stuff perfect for a couple like us, blending that old-school charm with smart modern bits. The open-plan kitchen, living, and dining area hit us straight away: vaulted ceilings soaring overhead, a skylight flooding the place with light even on a grey afternoon, and underfloor heating that warmed our soggy socks instantly. I dumped the bags and beelined for the kettle, while my other half flopped on the sofa, declaring it the comfiest spot in England. First impressions? Bloody brilliant – or rather, spot on, since we were knackered from the road.

That arrival chaos melted away as we unpacked. I had a daft moment reflecting on how I always pack too much – three jumpers for a three-day trip? – but it felt right here, like the place invited you to unwind properly. We cracked open a bottle of local cider (picked up from a farm shop en route, despite the sat-nav debacle) and planned our first wander: a gentle stroll along the River Wye, maybe a nose around Hereford’s cathedral tomorrow, just four miles off. No grand adventures yet, but the promise of it all, wrapped in this gem of a spot, had us grinning.

By evening, we’d whipped up pasta in the slick kitchen – those units are a dream for lazy cooks like me – and lounged about, listening to the quiet beyond the windows. Herefordshire’s countryside magic was right there, peeking through, but honestly, after that manic journey, just being here felt like the win. If you’re after a bolthole near Hereford with valley views on tap, this is it. Can’t wait to go back.
