About Herefordshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Herefordshire last month – what was meant to be a straightforward jaunt from the M5 turned into a comedy of errors thanks to my dodgy sat-nav. It kept insisting we take a “shortcut” through some winding lanes that narrowed to the width of a postcard, complete with overhanging branches slapping the windscreen like an overenthusiastic game of whack-a-mole. Then, just as we neared Hereford, I missed the turning for the property and ended up circling a muddy farm track, tyres slipping in the drizzle, while my other half helpfully suggested I “pull over and ask a cow for directions”. By the time we finally spotted the place, hearts racing and tempers a tad frayed, I was half-convinced we’d stumbled into a episode of some rural reality show.

But oh, what a turnaround. Pulling up to this cosy detached cottage, tucked away in a peaceful spot just outside Hereford, my first thought was pure relief – and then sheer delight. It’s the sort of holiday let that whispers “welcome home” rather than screaming “tourist trap”: picture-perfect with a welcoming vibe, flower tubs nodding in the breeze, and that irresistible promise of downtime. We tumbled out of the car, laughing off the chaos, and the host had left a little note on the door with fresh milk and scones – proper thoughtful touch that melted away the last of the drive’s stress.

Stepping inside, it was even better than the photos. Spacious, light-filled rooms with everything you need for a proper unwind: a telly big enough for footie nights, a kitchen stocked with all the bits for a fry-up, and a lounge that begged for lazy afternoons with a brew. The bedrooms were snug as a bug, beds piled high with fluffy duvets – I claimed the one with the view over the garden straight away. First impressions? Spot on. It felt like the ideal base for pottering around this corner of Herefordshire, all without the hassle of city bustle.

That first evening, we barely ventured far – just a short hop to nearby Brockington Hall for a gentle stroll around their gardens, where the roses were still blooming despite the autumn nip. The air was crisp, laced with that earthy Herefordshire scent, and we munched on pasties from a local bakery we’d spotted en route. Back at the cottage, I lit the fire (after a minor faff with the matches – clearly not my forte) and we cracked open a bottle of cider from Three Choirs vineyard, just a couple of miles down the road. It was bliss, watching the flames dance while reflecting on how I’d almost talked myself out of the trip, buried under work emails. What a daft mug I’d have been – sometimes you need a bit of arrival pandemonium to appreciate the simple joys.

Honestly, if you’re after a holiday spot that turns a mishap-filled journey into memories worth retelling, this is it. Herefordshire’s charm snuck up on us that first day, and we hadn’t even scratched the surface. Can’t wait to go back.
