About Herefordshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Herefordshire last month – what was meant to be a straightforward jaunt from the M5 turned into a comedy of errors thanks to Sat Nav’s sudden rebellion. We’d been humming along nicely, me and the missus with a thermos of tea and a bag of pork scratchings, when the bloody thing decided to reroute us through some winding B-road that felt like it hadn’t seen tarmac since the war. Then, just as we spotted the first ‘Welcome to Herefordshire’ sign, a rogue pheasant shot out from nowhere, forcing me into an emergency swerve that sent our crisps flying everywhere. Chips ahoy, indeed. By the time we trundled into Eardisland, we were late, a bit frazzled, and I was vowing never to trust technology again.

Still, pulling up to this exemplary converted barn on a working farm in the village had us grinning like Cheshire cats from the off. We’d been buzzing with anticipation all week – visions of cosy rural bliss after months of city grind – and it didn’t disappoint. The place just oozed that proper countryside charm, tucked away amid fields where cows mooched about like they owned the joint. First impressions? Spot on. We tumbled out of the car, brushing crisp crumbs from our laps, and there it was: our home for the week, all welcoming and lived-in, with the farmyard smells of hay and fresh earth hitting us like a warm hug. The owner popped out with a cheery wave and a basket of eggs from their hens – talk about arriving in style.

Dumping the bags inside, we were hit with that instant ‘ahh’ moment. The space felt just right for us two, with everything you need without any faff: a cracking kitchen for knocking up fry-ups, and a lounge that screamed ‘put your feet up’. We cracked open a bottle of local cider (grabbed from the village shop on the way – pro tip: stock up early) and just soaked it in. Outside, the sun was dipping low over the meadows, painting everything golden, and you could hear the gentle lowing of cattle and the odd tractor chug. Pure magic after our road saga.

That first evening, we wandered down to Eardisland’s high street – it’s only a hop away – and poked around the old black-and-white cottages and the River Arrow bubbling along. Popped into the village pub for a pint of something hoppy from a nearby brewery, chatting with locals about the harvest. No big plans, just ambling back as dusk fell, past the ancient church with its wonky tower. Sat on the patio under a blanket of stars, reflecting on how I’d been proper knackered from work lately, scrolling endlessly on my phone. This? This was the reset button I didn’t know I needed. A bit of arrival chaos aside, it reminded me why these farm stays are gold dust – close to nature, zero pretension, and just enough mischief to make the memories stick. Can’t wait to go back.
