About Herefordshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Herefordshire last month – me at the wheel, my wife navigating with that sat-nav that kept insisting we turn left into a field. We’d packed the car with enough cheese and biscuits for a siege, dreaming of a proper escape from the daily grind. About ten miles out from Leominster, disaster struck: a rogue pheasant decided our windscreen was its personal trampoline. Feathers everywhere, heart in my mouth, but we pulled over, dusted off, and laughed it off as a proper rural welcome. By the time we trundled up the lane to the cottage, anticipation was buzzing – would it live up to the photos?

First impressions? Spot on. It’s one of those cosy, traditional cottages you picture when you think English countryside – low doorways that make you duck like a guilty schoolboy, and a garden that spills over with wildflowers and bird feeders. We arrived mid-afternoon, dumped the bags, and cracked open a pot of tea on the patio, watching the sun dip behind the hedges. No grand mansion, just perfect for us two, a child-free couple treating ourselves to some proper downtime.

The next few days blurred into that glorious cottage chaos we crave. Mornings started slow: I’d faff about brewing coffee while she pottered in the kitchen, burning toast and giggling about it. We’d wander down to Leominster’s market – just a short hop away – grabbing fresh veg and artisan bread from the stalls. The town’s got that unhurried charm, with its priory looming like a friendly giant and cafes spilling onto the pavements. One lunch, we demolished ploughman’s at a spot by the river, feet dangling off the bank, pretending we were locals.

Afternoons were for simple pleasures. We ambled along the nearby lanes, spotting hares darting through the orchards – Herefordshire’s cider country, after all, so we couldn’t resist a detour to a farm shop for bottles of scrumpy. Back at the cottage, chaos ensued: I tried my hand at a roast, only for the oven to rebel and fill the place with smoke. We ended up with fish and chips from the chippie in town, eaten cross-legged on the rug with a bottle of wine, proper slovenly bliss. Evenings meant board games by the fire (well, the wood burner), her trouncing me at Scrabble every time – I blame the scrumpy.

One night, staring at the stars from the garden – clearer than city skies ever get – I had a quiet moment of reflection. Life’s mad rush feels miles away here. We’re not spring chickens, but these getaways remind me we’ve still got that spark, finding joy in burnt toast and pheasant near-misses. Herefordshire’s got this magic for recharging the soul, all without leaving the cottage gate far behind. If you’re after a relaxed family-couple break (minus the kids, in our case), this is it – pure, unpretentious heaven. We’re already plotting a return.
