About Herefordshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Herefordshire last month – me behind the wheel, sat-nav chirping away, and my mate Dave fiddling with the playlist. We were aiming for this cracking detached cottage just outside Stoke Prior, a pretty little village near Leominster, and everything was tickety-boo until we hit a massive pothole about five miles out. Crunch! The car lurched, and for a heart-stopping moment I thought we’d blown a tyre. Turned out it was just a wobble, but it had us pulling over for a brew and a laugh about how us city folk aren’t cut out for country roads. Still, as we trundled on, the rolling hills and that fresh countryside air had me buzzing with anticipation – proper escape from the daily grind.

Pulling up to the place was a right treat. Tucked in the grounds of the owner’s home, this part-16th century gem oozes character over three cosy floors, with a farmhouse-style kitchen that’s a dream for knocking up dinners for a big group. First impressions? Spot on – homely furnishings, space galore, and that instant ‘ahh’ feeling of being somewhere special. We dumped the bags, cracked open a bottle, and planned to explore, but Herefordshire had other ideas. This area’s full of hidden gems if you’re daft enough to get lost, and boy, did we.

First wander out, we took a wrong turn down a single-track lane thinking it’d loop back to the village. Instead, it spat us out at a tucked-away picnic spot by the River Lugg, all wildflowers and not a soul in sight. We picnicked there with cheese from a nearby farm shop (grabbed some on the way in), watching herons fish – pure magic, the sort of place guidebooks skip. Dave quipped it was like stumbling into a hobbit hole, and I couldn’t argue.

Next day, aiming for Stoke Prior’s church – quaint little thing with a cracking view – we veered off down a bridleway marked ‘footpath only’. Classic us. It led to a forgotten orchard heavy with apples, the kind you’d miss if you stuck to the main drags. We picked a few (with permission from a passing farmer, honest), and baked a crumble back at the cottage that night. Proper taste of the Marches, that did.

The real highlight was getting properly lost on a hike through the woods behind the village. No signal, no map, just following a babbling brook that took us to a hidden dew pond – one of those ancient watering spots for livestock, now a serene mirror for the trees. Sat there with a flask, I had a bit of a moment, you know? Reflecting on how we’re always rushing about, chasing Instagram hotspots, when the best bits are these accidental finds. Made me grateful for the pothole that set the tone – without it, we might’ve played it safe.

By the end of the week, we’d uncovered a secret viewpoint over the Frome Valley (stumbled on it via a muddy track), a wildflower meadow perfect for a impromptu barbecue, and even a tiny tearoom in a converted barn we only found because the car wouldn’t start first time. Herefordshire’s countryside rewards the wanderers, especially from a base like this cottage. If you fancy ditching the crowds for proper off-the-beaten-path charm, pack your wellies and get lost – you won’t regret it.
