About Shropshire
I’ll never forget the drive to Shropshire – a proper faff from the start. We’d packed the car with enough books, snacks, and wine to last a siege, but halfway there, just past Ludlow, the satnav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us down a single-track lane that looked like it hadn’t seen daylight since the war. Branches scraping the roof, my other half muttering about “one more shortcut,” and me white-knuckling the armrest. Twenty minutes of mild panic later, we emerged, laughing it off, and suddenly the rolling hills opened up like a welcome mat. By then, the anticipation was buzzing – visions of kicking back in some proper countryside idyll, far from the daily grind.

Pulling up to the cottage in Lydbury North, my heart did a little flip. It’s one of those luxurious spots perfect for couples or a small family, all handsome inside with everything you need, and that outside space? Blimey, a dream. Hot tub bubbling away, a cracking patio for alfresco dinners, and views over fields that stretch on forever. First impressions? Spot on. We dumped the bags, cracked open a bottle of fizz, and just breathed it all in. No rush, no plans – that was the point.

The joy of the next few days was doing bugger all, and loving every second. Mornings started slow: a potter in the kitchen for tea and toast, then straight out to the garden with a book. I’d sink into one of those loungers, the sun filtering through the trees, losing myself in a thriller while birdsong drowned out the world. My partner would wander off for a gentle amble around the nearby lanes – nothing strenuous, just enough to work up an appetite – and return with tales of sheep giving him the side-eye. Lunch was simple: cheese from the local farm shop (picked up on that first supply run to the village), fresh bread, and a bit of lounging on the patio. Afternoons blurred into hot tub sessions, bubbles and all, with nothing but the hum of bees and distant cows for company. One evening, we managed a half-hearted barbecue – sausages charred just right – and ate under the stars, too lazy to even clear up properly.

There’s something magic about slowing down like that. I caught myself one afternoon, mid-chapter, thinking how I never switch off at home. Emails ping, to-do lists nag – but here? Time stretched out lazy as a cat in the sun. No guilt, just pure, unadulterated nothing. We did pop into Acton once for a pint at the pub – proper Shropshire ale, locals nodding hello – but mostly, it was garden naps, reading till eyes drooped, and the odd hand of cards by the wood burner as dusk fell. Walking? Barely a mile, just enough to stretch the legs and admire the hedgerows bursting with blackberries.

Leaving felt bittersweet, but what a reset. If you’re craving a holiday where the highlight is savouring the quiet, this corner of Shropshire’s your spot. Proper bliss.
