About Shropshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Ludlow – one of those classic British road trips where everything’s going swimmingly until it isn’t. We’d set off from Birmingham full of that fizzy anticipation, you know, the kind where you’re already imagining cream teas and castle views, windows down and Radio 2 on. Then, about halfway, the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us on a detour through some winding lanes that felt more like a rally stage than the M54. We ended up behind a tractor doing about 10 miles an hour, laughing our heads off as the kids in the back started a chorus of “Are we there yet?” every two minutes. But honestly, it just added to the fun – by the time we rolled into town, we were properly primed for unwinding.

Pulling up to this beautiful 16th-century Grade II-listed townhouse on Ludlow’s finest street was like stepping into a postcard. It’s got everything you could wish for in an all-year escape: cosy nooks, a cracking kitchen, and that effortless charm that screams “put your feet up”. Ludlow itself is England’s loveliest market town, isn’t it? Medieval castle looming proudly, Tudor history in every corner, and streets lined with delis, butchers, bakeries, and those tempting chocolatiers. But we weren’t here for ticking boxes – oh no, this trip was all about doing sod all, and loving every lazy minute.

First morning, I wandered out to the garden with a cuppa, the Shropshire Hills stretching out like a green blanket under a proper blue sky. It’s smack in the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, but instead of lacing up boots for a hike, I plonked myself in a lounger with a dog-eared paperback. The sun warmed my face, birds twittered away, and for once, my phone stayed in my bag. Bliss. Lunch was a faff-free affair – nipped to the market for some local cheese, crusty bread from the bakery, and a bottle from the wine shop. Back home, we sprawled in the garden, grazing and chatting nonsense, watching clouds drift over the hills. No itinerary, no rush – just that glorious slow-down feeling.

Afternoons blurred into siestas and more reading. I’d flick through pages while the others dozed or fiddled with a jigsaw in the sunlit sitting room. One evening, we ambled barely five minutes to a café for cake and people-watching – Ludlow’s buzzing but never overwhelming. The castle’s right there, whispering history, but we saved our energy for stargazing from the garden later, wrapped in blankets with mugs of tea. There’s something magic about switching off like that; I caught myself reflecting on how often I bulldoze through life at full pelt. Here, time stretched out – no FOMO, just contentment.

Even the littlest things shone: brewing coffee in the mornings, listening to a festival band faintly from the castle grounds during their summer series, or spotting walkers on the hills and feeling smugly rooted. We skipped the racecourse and food festival crowds – too much like hard work – and just savoured the townhouse’s hush. Leaving felt bittersweet; I’m already plotting a return for lazy autumn days amid the turning leaves. If you fancy proper relaxation in Shropshire’s heart, this is your spot. Pure joy in doing nothing.
