About Blackwater Meadows.

Known as Shropshire's Lakeland, Ellesmere is a picturesque market town with Tudor, Georgian, and Victorian buildings. Nestled between the Shropshire meres and the Llangollen Canal, it was once a fortified Anglo-Saxon settlement. Thomas Telford lived here while building the canals in the late 18th century. The town's church boasts a 15th-century roof. Enjoy meres activities, fishing, boating, Colemere Country Park, canal walks, Cremorne Gardens, shops, pubs, and restaurants. An attractive spot for all ages year-round.

About Shropshire
I finally made it to Ellesmere after what felt like the world's most chaotic drive from the M54. Picture this: me, my other half, our two daft Labradors, and a boot stuffed to bursting with enough gear for a month-long expedition. About ten miles out, disaster struck – the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and directed us down a narrow lane that was basically a mudslide after the recent rain. We slid around like we were in a dodgy episode of Top Gear, with the dogs barking their heads off and me yelling directions from the passenger seat like a wannabe rally co-driver. "Left! No, right! Oh, hang on..." By the time we emerged, caked in Shropshire muck, we were all laughing – well, almost all. The dogs just looked smug.

Pulling up to this cracking single-storey holiday home overlooking Blackwater Meadow Marina, my heart did a little flip. I'd been buzzing about it for weeks, imagining lazy canal views and proper downtime, and blimey, it didn't disappoint. There it was, right on the marina edge, with moored narrowboats bobbing gently below and the water glinting in the late afternoon sun. First impressions? Spot on. Stepping inside felt like a warm hug after our road farce – straight into a cosy living space with plush sofas begging you to flop down and flick on the telly. The kitchen was a dream for the designated chef (that's me, usually armed with spuds and a vague recipe), fully kitted out with everything you could need to whip up a shepherd's pie or just boil the kettle without faffing about.

We dumped the bags and let the dogs loose – they'd been cooped up for hours, and this place is proper dog-friendly, which was a godsend. Three comfy bedrooms sorted us out perfectly: one for us, one for the kids' stuff (they were off exploring later), and a spare that could've slept another mate. From the windows, you could watch the boats chug along the Llangollen Canal, and it was so close to Ellesmere town centre that we nipped out for essentials without breaking a sweat – past the little shops and the canal basin, all quaint and proper Shropshire.

That first evening, after scrubbing off the arrival grime, we cracked open a bottle of wine on the patio, feet up, dogs snoring at our sides. The mishap on the lane? It melted away. Made me reflect a bit, actually – we're always rushing about, aren't we? Jobs, school runs, the daily grind. Here, staring at that serene marina, I realised how rare it is to just... stop. No signal stress, no deadlines, just us and the water's gentle lap. We wandered down to the marina the next morning, past the swing bridge, and hired a little canoe – nothing fancy, but paddling under the first locks with herons flapping overhead was pure magic. Popped into town for a pub lunch at The Red Lion, fish and chips that hit the spot, then back for a nap. Ellesmere's got that unpretentious charm – canal walks, the mere for a splash if the weather holds, and enough quiet spots to recharge without feeling isolated.

Honestly, if you're after a fuss-free family break with dogs in tow, this is it. Our bumpy start turned into the best kind of holiday memory. Can't wait to go back – sans the sat-nav drama, mind.
